exit0 08-14-2009, 01:07 PM Regardless of being a preseason game or not, the offense just sucks. No points, no good drives, etc, etc. I fear just like last year, the receivers hardly get open by much and the opposing defense can really cheat up and not have to lay back. Until they prove me wrong, I'm afraid it's going to be another of year of great defense and poor offense. Seems that the Skins offense continues to give the other team a short field to have to move for points.

Well your jumping on the O but your giving the D a pass after they gave up 500 yards?
Beemnseven 08-14-2009, 01:24 PM I really thought the OLine looked good, well the first and seconds. Campbell was not touched, I don't think, except for a blown block by Betts. And Collins seemed to have time as well. Also, I would point out that the D we were playing was no slouch.
I think I said this before, we got a good break with our preseason schedule, because the offense is going to get tested by the best of the best defenses. Maybe they won't rise up, but if our O can be forged into something better than last year, these are the teams we should be playing.
We beat Indy in the opener last year, didn't mean much. I don't think this loss will mean much either.
And yes I am disappointed.
If you and I are thinking about the same play, then it was Cooley who missed his block, while Betts actually saved Campbell from getting blasted. That was also the same play which showed Rinehart, Rabach and Dockery with all of their arms spread out looking for someone to hit -- Rabach was getting dressed down on the sidelines by a coach immediately afterwards.
Good point about the defenses we'll be facing -- but I always cringe when I hear excuses being made for a poor performance because the opponent has a really good defense ... If we're aren't good enough to beat the best, then there's no point in playing. In every sport, the object is to be the champion. Not just be good against average teams.

I saw the play, and blamed Betts apparently incorrectly, but either way the point that the front 5 held there own against a top tier D. I am sure that was one of Zorn's concerns was to see how the oline was playing, before putting more 3 or 4 wr sets in.
I am not trying to make excuses, but it is true in any practice session you hone skills, with winning as the secondary task. If Zorn was using this game in an evaluation mode, putting players in tough spots and now he teaches from that, and they get better than great. If he went in with a gameplan to "win" and that was the best they can do, than we are in serious trouble.
Time will tell. I always thought Gibbs used preseason tremendously, even though he didn't always win the individual games.
over the mountain 08-14-2009, 02:06 PM i missed the first half but listened to most of it on the radio. i figured harbaugh was not going to lose in the first game of the season in front of his rabid home town fans, even if it was preseason. from all the interviews ive heard, giving your hometown fans and team and positive start is important.
to that end . . . did the ravens leave their 1st team O out there longer than ours so that it was really ravens 1st team O v our 2nd team D or was it that second ravens drive that lasted so long that gave me that impression?
i think if this was at fed ex and the first ps game, the skins would have been much more focused on winning.
go skins!!
WaldSkins 08-14-2009, 03:47 PM Wow. I didn't even get a chance to watch it -- and I'm thoroughly disappointed. (I watched Wheel of Fortune instead.. ugh)
Sure. this is preseason and we're getting everything together. BUT -- this is preseason for the Ravens as well. And they kicked our ass. To be shut out and allow over 500 yards means we sucked from starters right down to the scrubs. Their depth is clearly much better than ours.
I'm worried about the defensive effort, but somehow I think we'll work it out. Put Haynesworth and Rogers in there, maybe things get a little better. I sure hope so.
What I'm NOT hopeful about is our offense. Getting excited about Kelly and 25 yards is hard to swallow. The O-line is good news, but I'm not as concerned about how good they are -- more about whether they'll stay healthy. Good to hear about BMW, Rhineheart, and backup center who I hear did okay.
After all this -- what can we do to make the offense better? Is it just that Zorn sucks at play-calling? Is it JC? Sure it's preseason - but our offense has sucked for years and looks about the same (if not worse). I think this is clearly a bad sign.
We were without Rogers, Haynesworth, and Phillip Daniels(He maybe played 10 snaps). Their #1 draft pick just destroyed Renaldo Wynn off the line most of the night. Does anyone think that Wynn is even going to make the team with the depth we have on the D-Line?

We where also without Randy Thomas and CP. However, CR did step up and play well at RG.
RW looked bad, I do not see him making the team. But stranger things have happened.
skinsfan69 08-14-2009, 06:55 PM ah football sure is back.
Overreactions, freak outs, and over analysis.
And... it's only August! Just wait til these things are for real.
lol. you can't be happy w/ what you saw. i got even more pissed once i watched two teams that are better than we are play with some damn urgency.
