I know it is just 1 preseason game but Kelly was way better than Devon Thomas contrary to what we've been hearing....and what happened to Hackett?
He was invisable as well as anyone fighting for the #5 WR spot.

"... but I agree with others... why is Orakpo, a guy who didn't play LB in college our STARTING OLB? I mean, I'm sure eventually he could be good there, but he is a pass-rusher in the mold of a Freeney, Tuck, Ware, not a guy who should be covering Todd Heap![/QUOTE]"
Because who else do we have that can play OLB for us? In other words, Daniels is one hell of a run-stopping defensive end and Orakpo is not. Orakpo is being groomed to play DE, hopefully better than Daniels in passing situations. But right now it makes sense, they couldn't afford to keep Washington and get a DE, so they tried to get both DE and OLB at once. Smart idea.

It was a first pre-season game for sure. I am not too worried, that is why we play these things.
We need to work on our tackling and Fred Davis needs to learn how to hold onto a ball.

Ironic after all we have heard that our Oline played ok and our Dfense stunk.
Even RT Williams did ok

Good question...well, our LB's are suspect, our secondary is not neccessarily as strong as last year with Springs missing...arguably our best player on D when he was playing.
Every new player is always more hype than production, no way all 3 live up to hype...certainly not 2 rookies, Jarmon likely wont play much at all, Orapko will be attacked as a LB...Haynesworth is solid but is not used to who he is playing with, nor the scheme...so if they start out the way they ended the season and end up top 3 or so, they will be top 10 but not top 5.
Remember our D was technically top 4 last year in yards, however, they blew several games at the end of the year wearing down and giving up long game sealing drives...I just don't believe they hype until I see it
Our LBs aren't the strongest. Springs was hurt most of last year. He did play good against T.O. tho. We have basically the same linebackers besides Marcus Washington being gone - He also stayed injured. Jarmon and Orakpo are big improvements to the old timers we keep holding on to for the D-line. I agree with the Rak at linebacker statement. they should stick him back on the D-line and stop trying to make him into a hybrid player. I don't think the scheme will stop Haynesworth from being effective. I think that statement is idiotic. If they were top 5 last year why do you think they would drop all the way to 10. Its possible. But we added better D-lineman.
To end this its only one preseason game.

49ers no match for Redskins / Secondary can't keep up with Washington passing prowess (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article/article?f=/c/a/2002/08/04/SP179617.DTL)
Just saying...
Ah, the good old days of Rosenfels to Thompson. That American Bowl win really catapulted us, didn't it?

oh yeah...fincher really sucked...way worse that Marcus Washington would have done...I say we have a significant need...enough to reconsider signing the guy...not to mention that could free up Orapko to play DE full time

I don't think Orakpo is ready to play DE full time. He's been losing weight since the draft and wasn't a big run stopper to begin with.
We have to give Orakpo more than one preseason game before the switch to LB can truly be evaluated.

If he can stay healthy all you kids are going to be happily jumping on the
GTripp/WilsoWilso Malcolm Kelly bandwagon.

If people on this board are now going to fret about the defense I really don't know what to say?
