10 Years of Snyder-AP Interview

I have mixed feelings about Snyder. On the one hand, he's generous with those in his good graces, is actively involved in charities, and is unquestionably a die-hard Redskins fan. On the other hand, I've read far too many accounts of him being petty and vindictive (e.g., the Mike Nolan ice cream incident and the Coles dispute). I suppose he's like all of us; he's got some virtues and he's got some vices.

I think he's kind of like Kenneth the bad-ass mail clerk with the heart of gold from Family Guy. He's a good guy but puts up a front until/unless he's comfortable with you and isn't the best at one-on-one relationships (at least not early on)

SGG, to your point about Snyder being petty and vindictive, I listened to an interview with Bert Sugar, the long-time boxing commentator, who said that he ran into Snyder once and introduced himself by saying, "Dan, howya doin', Burt Sugar," -- Sugar tried to shake his hand. Apparently, Dan snapped, "IT'S MR. SNYDER," and walked away. Needless to say, Sugar doesn't have a good things to say about him.

I don't have an opinion of him personally. I just look at the scoreboard:

76 wins, 84 losses. And that's being generous. Because the '99 season shouldn't count.

He's the owner of a team that is consistenly average year in and year out. Unless there's a fundamental change in the way he does things, I fear that's all this team ever will be under his reign.

Ok, so I am definitely a Snyder apologist, like I said earlier, I don't know how many 34 year olds can come into the NFL and make it as a head coach, let alone running one of the most storied franchises in the league. I think that we should all realize that he didn't run the Skins deep into the ground and alienate the whole fanbase, just as he didn't run us to 3 or 4 SB titles, or even Division Titles. He went through a lot of growing pains as his feet tried to fill some awfully big shoes left by Jack Kent Cooke Jr.

That being said, the 76-84 mark just isn't going away, and the only thing that will ever change most peoples opinion is if the team starts having consistent success like the 80's/early 90's.

Compare Snyder's first 10 years to JJ's first 10 years. The Cowboys got to 4 SB, won 3, early in JJ's tenure, but that mainly covered over JJ's many flaws, and gives him solice that his way works, vs DS whose flaws were open, and by all evidence (in my eyes) he is really working through what it means to be a SB caliber owner.

Did you know the Redskins record in the 10 years before Snyder (1989-1998) was 79-80-1? What does that mean? Nothing really, just thought I'd put it out there.

But how much can an owner do to influence the results on the field? If anything I suppose he should have/could have said no more often to the wishes of his staff and coaches. But he's just about always given the team what it's asked for. Whether it's Spurrier saying he needs a guy like Canidate to complement The Wuerff or Saunders saying Lloyd would be the perfect fit for his offense.

Very true, for all the talk of "meddling" he has allowed coaches to put a definitive stamp on their team. Spurrier's teams are the best (and thus worst as well) examples. Many owners would've never allowed Wuerfful in their bldg.

That seems to me part of the danny's learning curve, he's tried about every way. Hiring Gibbs was a major move long-term IMO in that he allowed him more of a gm role. As Gibbs left it appears Vinny has filled this void. We've still got to wait & see how it plays out, but there have been positive signs for sure.

I have always been impressed w/Snyder's accomplishmnets, he's done amazing things as a young man. That certainly has to be taken into account. But young or not, he's done plenty to deserve criticism. As always in sports, a lot can be forgiven if you win. I truly hope he is successful in building a consistent winner in the Skins. But, if it's like this another 10 years, I hope he sells!
