Our old friend Trent Green retired

Green started every game for the Chiefs from 2001 through 2005, never passing for less than 3,600 yards in any of those seasons and surpassing 4,000 in three of them. However, a string of scary concussions started the beginning of the end for Green in the next few seasons. Despite urging from many, he decided not to retire after multiple concussions and spent last season as Marc Bulger's backup in St. Louis, starting one game and playing in three.

The Rams released him not long ago and rather than pursue another playing opportunity, he's decided to move in another direction.

Heck of a career. Still wish the ownership change didn't throw a wrench in the works in trying to retain him. Heard him on NFL Radio saying he is going into broadcasting.

Yeah, having that probably would've spared us Spurrier and a lot of other circus acts following.

I remember you saying this in another thread Matty, that this was the player you hated to see go the most. I have to agree, though Champ was my favorite. If TG had re-signed here it might've stabilized the team prior to danny taking over.

Green was a QB I always liked...even when all he did was get a few reps in the preseason. Never thought he'd end up having the career he had. Just goes to show that you don't need to tear it up your first five years in the league to have a strong NFL career

I agree. Had the Skins been able to keep TG I dont think there would have been the constant flux and mess at QB the Skins have endured since he left.

You could easily add him to the "What if list" just like Atlanta and Favre. Well, maybe not quite Favre level, but it is always painful to see a guy leave and be very good for someone else.

Our "what if" list is sadly long though. For a while, it seemed that every QB we let go would then turn into a great(er) player...Green, Stan Humphries, Rich Gannon.

Thankfully, Patrick Ramsey still sucks.

Trent Green probably would not get 1/3 the necessary votes for HoF induction, but, perhaps people will take a closer look at this:

Looking at the best 4 year span of each man's career:
Kurt Warner [99-02] 1,079-for-1,612 (67.0%); 101 TDs/64 INTs (about 3:2); 14,043 yards (Y/A: 8.7)
Trent Green [02-05] 1,303-for-2,056 (63.4%); 94 TDs/52 INTs (about 2:1); 16,334 yards (Y/A: 7.9)

There's a lot of people who feel confident that Warner will pass his HoF exam in 6 or 7 years, and the numbers he put up in Stl. were totally cartoonish. I mean, Tom Brady has never bettered 8.3 Y/A, and that 8.7 Warner's average in four years as a Rams starter.

But Green was right there step for step just a few years later. For Trent, he just got caught up in the QB explosion of 2002-2004 (Gannon, McNair, Manning, McNabb, Brady, Brees (the big ones), even Vick to an extent), unfortunately, and it probably cost him the necessary pro bowl recognition for HoF consideration.
