Good news for Dems..

This won't change the court's ideological composition, and because Souter is the youngest of the four committed liberals on the court, I'm not sure there will be true joy for Dems unless Stevens and Ginsburg also retire within the next three years. Despite her recent battle with cancer, Ginsburg is saying she plans to continue serving well into her 80s, and Stevens is apparently vying to become the longest serving justice in the court's history. Meaning, that it's not clear that either of them have any plans to retire in Obama's first term. If Obama serves two terms, I think he'll end up putting as many as five justices on the court, but I also think three of those would occur in his second term. The true wild card here is obviously Kennedy. If he were to announce his retirement before 2012, that would be the true bombshell.
