celts32 04-29-2009, 03:55 PM The skins have no use for Edge what so ever. The Redskins need a change of pace back behind Portis. Someone who can take it to the house. Betts gets like 5 carries a game...his role is irrelevant unless CP is injured. The Redskins need someone who can present a different dimension to the running game then CP and it isn't Edge or Betts.
Son Of Man 04-29-2009, 04:49 PM So the fact that I disapprove of the FO makes me a hater and I am not loyal? Are you kidding me? This site would not even exist if this were the protocol for being a skins fan. By the way, after searching your post history, you have just proven yourself to be a hypocrite. Clearly you're not ok with all of the moves this front office has made. If it were up to you, Matt Hasselbeck would be our starting QB. Don't give me any self righteous sh*t about being a fan.
Actually, if you have viewed my post history you would see that I view the last few years of our acquisition very favorably. Next time you make a statement, please reference a specific post.
Also, the Hasselbeck point you are trying to use was in response to a thread (I believe tounge in cheek) about using MH as a stop gap until Brennan is ready to start, if Seattle would have chosen Sanchez and dropped MH. And yes, I would have approved of that strategy and traded JC for a 2nd round pick this year (hopefully to the Vikings) which could have been used on OT's Loadholt or Beatty. I am one who readily admits that I see Brennan taking over at QB in 2010 or 2011 if we would have acquired MH in free agency. All a moot point now, post-draft.
Maybe I was a bit harsh, but...unapologetically so. I do not see the point in some of you guys constantly berating the FO and bashing every move we do/don't make. I do not agree with everything we do but, to answer your quip, yes...I do root for whomever is wearing a Redskins jersey come football season. That's what fans do whether they agree with the personnel or not. I am not a Rush Limbaugh-esque Skins fan. I'll never want my team to fail simply because I don't like the boss's strategy. But hey that's me...keep on hating!

Dude, you're so far off base. Someone questions our backup RB and accuses the FO of being slow to make the proper personnel moves, so they are a hater? First of all, I went on record as saying I have approved most of what Vinny has done the last two seasons. You clearly overlooked that post within this thread. I absolutely loved the Haynesworth and Hall signings while most people blasted VC. I like Jason Campbell and fall into the category of those who wish to add to the O line instead of going after a big name QB. Just because I disapprove of a certain player, doesn't mean that I'm not going to cheer on my team. If we had given up our draft and moved up for Sanchez, I would have been pissed as hell, but I'm still going to root for the Redskins. For you to question my allegiance based on the fact that I want a new RB, and to say that I want the team to fail, is absolutely childish and ridiculous.

Newbie -to- Newbie.....LOL
jsarno 04-29-2009, 07:45 PM Uh. You're wrong. Patriots have Randy Moss. Giants had Plaxico. Cards have Fitzgerald, Boldin. Steelers have Holmes, who is 5'11" but won them the game with his outstanding leaping ability and spectacular catches. Eagles are the exception and panthers are primarily a rushing O.
I think you missed his point, he wasn't saying EVERY playoff team has small wr's, but that some (and he provided examples) do.
Funny you used the pats as an example, they won super bowls without him, and not with him. haha.
You're reaching dude. I can think of most teams in the NFL that now have at least two starting caliber backs on their team. We are the only team now that promotes a primary one back system. Gtripp confirmed this, and agreed with me that running back is a definite need on this team.
It's amazing what 1 year can do...Betts was considered a viable starting caliber back just a year ago. I think we need to get younger at the position personally, but it's not like Betts is a piece of poo.
Wow...the ONLY team huh? Sure you don't want to rethink that?
KingRaloIV 04-30-2009, 04:22 PM Lets make a move for James and get rid of Betts! Lets put Mason in to back up portis and let james be the power back. He is durable and would be a good 1-2 punch for the running game.
Skins4L 05-08-2009, 07:05 AM ^
agreed.
Edge would be a solid pickup... hed be great pounding up the middle when CP needs a spell.
Lets sign Edgerrin James (one year deal). then proceed to TRADE Betts.
next year WE SHOULD draft another RB. at least a second rounder with potential.
firstdown 05-08-2009, 11:51 AM I put these guys up here because one is the control (Alexander) who obviously will never play in the NFL again. Betts is the guy currently under contract here. And Edge is the best the FA market has to offer.
All three of these guys have something in common: that their days as a quality starter are clearly in the rear view mirror. But Portis is what, a year or two from that himself? The presence of a complementary back is more important this year than ever before.
Edge is clearly the better player than Betts at this point in their careers, and he's historically less of an injury risk (1 game missed due to injury in last 5 years), and he's coming off a year where the Cardinals did not at all abuse his legs, and he was effective in limited action.
I say this because Football Outsiders has him as the perfectly average back last year while backfield mate Tim Hightower was one of the worst in the league behind the same line, which ranked 30th in adjusted line yards and 29th in power rushing success. As riddled as our line was last year, it was unquestionably better than that, even in it's worst form.
Going back a season, Edge was still an average runner, even while JJ Arrington was one of the least valuable players in the league.
Bottom line is: I don't think Edge can still be a starter, but even at age 31, he's still a more effective runner behind a worse OL than what Betts (age 30) is behind ours. I think he's a better runner for our scheme than Betts is, and ultimately, we'd be a better team with Portis and Edge splitting carries than with Betts and Portis.
What I got from Bett's numbers is that the more he touches the ball the better his average is per carry. We use him to come in and run maybe a couple of plays and he might get the ball one out of those couple of plays each time he hits the field. We never give him the to get a good feel for the game. Most teams will wait until like the second half when their starter starts to get tired and turn it over to their backup to take the bulk of the snaps. That gives them the time to get a feel for what the line is doing and gives them a better chance to get better yards. I don't care how they use him but he just needs more touches to get a feel for the game.
