Man Removes Car Flag, Gets Clocked by Motorist

By Martin Weil
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, April 15, 2009; B04

A man who grabbed a Dallas Cowboys flag from a car in downtown Washington was punched in the face yesterday, startling passersby in an area that is home to lawyers, lobbyists and expensive shops and restaurants.

It occurred about 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of L Street NW, at a site just west of Connecticut Avenue, where few expect fisticuffs. Commuters were hurrying toward the Farragut North Metro station, and the car was stopped in traffic, police and witnesses said.

"It's crazy," said D.C. police Lt. Eric Hayes of the 2nd District. "It doesn't make sense."

But, he said, someone snatched the flag from a car, apparently threw it down, and crossed the street. "By the time he got across, someone exited the car" and struck him in the face, Hayes said.

It might have been motivated by team loyalty, he said. Or the motorist might have been particular about who touched his car.

One witness said she saw a "big tall man walk up to this guy and hit him across the head." Then, she said, the tall man "got back in his car and drove off."

She said that the motorist "just hit the man and walked off" and that he picked up an object from the ground, which might have been the flag.

The man who was hit fell and struck his head on the sidewalk, she said. Ringed by the concerned and the curious, the man lay facedown on the pavement.

"He was out cold for a good five minutes or so," the witness said.

Police said a man was taken from the scene for treatment of a bruised forehead.

Either a stupid redneck or an idiotic thug. Either way the person who grabbed the flag was in the wrong but the punishment doesn't fit the crime.

Ah, yes the essence of rivalry.
It is not that someone grabbed a flag and got his clocked cleaned.

It's the fact that someone at the Washington Post felt it was news worthy and put a headline on it.

On any other day it is a non-story.

You grab my 'Skins flag off of my car and you and I have a big time problem. That's like spiting in my face and any man that tolerates that is no man at all. You don't mess with a man's car or woman. Period.

It's loose talk like that....makes me want to block you off (for your own good) in the fast lane of the freeway!............

That's a pretty funny story.....

I'd be pretty pissed if someone ripped anything off my car and threw it to the ground! If you do something that's totally disrespectful to another mans property you deserve to get your bell rung!

Save the fight for something that matters. A car flag can easily be replaced.

It reminds me of these guys I used to hang out with my freshmen year of college. A group of guys started talking trash to them and all my friends did was laugh it off. Eventually they started insulting their families and whatever else they could think of, this lead to one of the guys going so far to spit on them. Still nothing. Later these same guys (the trash talkers) jumped a guy who was a friend of the group in a completely separate incident later that night. Since then I've never seen a group of guys get beaten so badly, among the guys who were my friends was a golden gloves boxer and a black belt in judo, obviously I was a bystander.

The point of the story is that strong people don't have to defend their honor, it's just something they have and no amount of pointless taunting can change. The only time they acted was when something important to them was truly wronged. I think it goes without saying I admire those guys and to this day I try and represent the values they stood for.
