Yeah I think Skins fans self-perception at times is a bit skewed to the negative. Most of my friends would actually prefer to have an owner like Snyder that spends money even though the results aren't always the best. They view it as him at least trying to bring a winner to DC. I definitely think Skins fans are more harsh on Snyder than fans of other teams are.
Paintrain 04-10-2009, 11:00 AM I think some fans are way too pessimistic about the team's situation. Granted that the occasional playoff appearance or two is not something to be super excited about, but at the same people are overdramatic when they say things like "we're a joke in the league" or "we're headed downhill" or "we have the worst owner of the league".
Here are other teams and owners that I think that fit the bill of being a joke in the league, heading downhill, and/or having terrible owners:
- Detroit Lions finishing 0-16 last year, and being a perennial loser
- Al Davis' Oakland Raiders, the whole Kiffin affair
- The Atlanta Falcons having their coach (Petrino) bail out on them after the whole Vick fiasco
- The decline of the KC Chiefs after being a perennial playoff team in the 90s.
- The Bengals becoming a haven for discipline and character issues.
- The circus known as Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys
- The decline of the San Francisco 49ers after being a powerhouse in the 90s
- And I dare to say it, the black eye that the New England Patriots will always have in sports history regarding Spygate (it's not as terrible as the other teams, but I think as a fan of the team it would suck that my team is associated with a cheating scandal).
I think some fans go too much out of their way to attack the team and the ownership, pretend like Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith were signed just yesterday, and love to praise other teams as a way to attack their own team. I know the team has made some stupid mistakes, but let's not pretend like we're the only team to do them.
Finally, in regards to the ownership and the front office, I admit that they are flawed, like everyone else. However, I do appreciate their willingness to take risks and to spend money. Sure, I would want the team to be in the NFC Championship 4 or 5 times, but ask the Iggle fans if they wish the team's ownership would spend a little bit of money to take it to the next level.
Regardless of its flaw, (and yeah I know I'm drinking the Kool-Aid here), I am glad that no one can say that the Redskins have a whole bunch of players with discipline and character issues or that they are cheaters.
I agree with virtually everything you said except the Patriots/Spygate thing. It was wrong, but it was majorly overwrought by the media. It wasn't that huge of an issue until the NFL-N and ESPN got hold of it.
To the question of the OP, among my friends I am the only Redskins fan. They think we're always set up for the let down by our transactions. It's baffling to them (and us) why we aren't a juggernaut being in a major market with an owner willing to do anything. My best friend, who is a Cowboys fan that lives in DC, thinks we are way too critical of each and every thing. He often calls me about the sky falling on 980 when there is the smallest controversy.
In general I think most fans are pretty hard on their own teams, harder than they are viewed by outsiders.
I remember a few weeks after the SB this year hearing a Steelers fan call in to "Moving the Chains" and was complaining about what the Steelers need to do in the draft, their weaknesses, this guy sucks, that guy sucks, and Tim Ryan stopped him mid-sentence and was like hold on brother, didn't you guys just win the Bowl?
mlewis 04-10-2009, 11:19 AM I think some so called fans are hard on the front office as well as the players, ie (Jason Campbell). I think there are a lot of teams that would love to have a qb that can play in as many systems as he has and show improvement each year yet many fans are ready to give up on him. Most blame Snyder for his need to grab other teams players when they have the same feelings( everyone else's players are better then ours so lets dump ours and get them)

You make a good point about the Pats, but the overblown hype by the media will cause this incident to be remembered right along with the successes of the team. I guess I shouldn't have put it in the context of "bad teams", but it just sucks for NE to have that label with them.
Trample the Elderly 04-10-2009, 12:53 PM I sit across three Cowboy fans and a Giant's fan. I could honestly care less how they see me. I just talk smack to them anyway. I keep my mouth shut when the Giant's girl pipes up. She's only a fan because her boyfriend is one, and she never said anything about football before the last season. I do ride her about Texaco Genius, and that cross-eyed mary they've got throwing for them. I dog the hell out of the Filth-a-delphia fan in the smoke room. She dogs Soup but I remind her, we OWN Philly.
I'm bringing a big Redskins helmet on Monday to put in the Cowpukes faces. Let them get that image.
I don't know how other fans see me but it has to be better than how they see the Filthy fans.
53Fan 04-10-2009, 01:05 PM I just figured our image reflects who we are. The most intelligent fans on the planet. :cool-smil
djdunick 04-10-2009, 01:13 PM i've seen fights at Redskins games between Redskins fans
This is truly unvelievable, save your swings for Philly and Cowboy fans, why fight amongs ourselves.
djdunick 04-10-2009, 01:18 PM I seriously think we're starting to get a bad image because of Snyder and the FO. I think a lot of fans of other teams see him as a joke and it trickles down to us because he still follow his team, which sucks.
Also, I think a lot of people see DC fans in general as front runners. Just look at the Verizon Center when the Caps/Wizards are doing well vs. when their not. Also, remember how bad the MNF game against the Steelers made us look this past season when FedEx was full of those F'ing yellow hankies.
- Yes I agree with the first paragraph. Snyder and that idiot Cerrato are viewed as a joke of a management team and gives the skins an overall bad reputation so that filters to us fans a bit.
- I disagree with the whole 'front runner' assertion. I've heard this before but with few exceptions this happens in every town when the team hasn't won in a while. ex. I hear about how 'passionate' the Beagles fans are yet I went to the Vet when they were terrible and there were plenty of empty seats in the lower bowl. Maybe Green Bay is an exception but most towns are like this
With that said it was indeed a sad day last November when I looked around the stadium and saw all those crappy yellow towels. This was a very big MNF game for us and it was sad to see people sell out for the cash because they knew Pittsburgh fans would pay big money.
Stacks42 04-10-2009, 01:30 PM I really think that Snyder and Cerrato give people the wrong impression of us Redskins fans. Most people that i speak with kinda of thing that we are foolish and arrogant. You know what i tell them? "I'm better than you, and I dont care what you think" and then I make it rain cash all over em.
