Shawn Springs To Be Released Today (UPDATED)
The Redskins have informed the veteran cornerback that he will be released from the final year of his contract, according to league sources. Springs, a free agent signing in 2004 and a Silver Spring native, will become an unrestricted free agent.

The Redskins will save $6 million in cap space by letting him go - badly needed at this time after the huge signings of CB DeAngelo Hall and DT Albert Haynesworth - and Springs could garner interest from New England, Dallas and Baltimore, among others. The Redskins are still trying to re-sign G Derrick Dockery as well.
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Shawn, and he confirmed the news. He said he loved being a Redskin and his five seasons here, but understands the business side of things.

"They did what's best for the team, and I'm happy for them," Springs said. "I'm going to miss my friends there, but as long as it makes the team better, I understand. I'm a true fan of the sport."

Springs's departure means that of the free agent/trade class of 2004 - the first of the Joe Gibbs regime - only DT Cornelius Griffin and RB Clinton Portis remain (at least that I can think of; working on 90 minutes of sleep warps your brain).

So much for the rumors about trading him to Houston for a 4th rounder.

Sayonara, Shawn. You were great when you were healthy, but I'd rather have your cap space than you this season.

Looks like we'll be able to get Dock on board now. Good.

Sorry to see him go. We were a better team when he played.

Guess they didn't pull off any trade. Like I said, my source on that was very weak that's why I asked if anyone else heard it.

Springs got a bad rap here, I'll miss him.

Expected move. I'm curious to see where he ends up. (Dallas?)

Skins were Smart here. If D. Hall signed somewhere else Springs was coming back. Now we got 9 years younger at Corner.
