Eknox 02-27-2009, 01:13 PM Are we still going after Canty? freddyg12 02-27-2009, 01:15 PM washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/27/AR2009022701209.html?hpid=topnews) this is a good & to me, obvious, assessment. SmootSmack 02-27-2009, 01:16 PM Are we still going after Canty? Don't think so wilsowilso 02-27-2009, 01:21 PM I think my post in the Peter King "Haynesworth to the Redskins" thread a few days ago sums things up for me. http://www.thewarpath.net/redskins-locker-room/28540-king-predicts-haynesworth-to-redskins-3.html#post529092 jamf 02-27-2009, 01:23 PM Wow. We might as well sign manny ramirez too! GMScud 02-27-2009, 01:23 PM washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/27/AR2009022701209.html?hpid=topnews) this is a good & to me, obvious, assessment. Yup. I agree with you and this article. freddyg12 02-27-2009, 01:25 PM Let's be real for a minute. There's downside to every deal. Every single one. There's always the potential issue of injuries, lack of production, and character flaws, and system knowledge at the professional level. So in my opinion, money is irrelevant to the extent that someone was going to sign him and benefit from his services anyway. So why not the Redskins. There's just a point, when it comes to a superstar athelete in his prime, some team will always be perceived as overpaying for this guy or that guy. What about the 49ers making a cornerback the highest paid player in NFL history last year? Since the Washington Redskins have a reputation for overspending, it just makes for juicier conversation. The point is, as far as numbers are concerned, can we stay under the cap. And we always seem to find a way to do so. So I could care less how much they paid for Haynesworth. Seriously. The whole argument about cap numbers and too much in salary is worthless in my opinion. You either win or lose in this league. Fans don't give a shit how much you were under the cap come Super Bowl sunday every year. They just don't. Now there can be an argument made that if we don't spend too much on this guy, we can afford that guy. But I digress. I just want the Skins to win. Period. Sometimes the big names work out and sometimes they don't. Bottom line, for the first time in a long time, we have a bona-fide bad ass in burgundy and gold. Sure, if he blows out his knee in camp, yeah, it looks like a bad effin move. But if we can keep Brandon Jacobs from running down our throats on third and short with the division title on the line, you betcha, Haynesworth was worth every burgundy cent of his contract. I get your point, to an extent. But it seems to oversimplify a broader issue; what's the best way to build a winner? The approach of signing the best guy to the biggest contract hasn't worked. Not just here, but elsewhere. We debate these issues here because we have knowledgable people & a few capologists that take the time to provide us w/info & potential scenarios. If we didn't look at the contracts in such a manner, this site would get boring IMO. As for the $ side of it. If you're a fan you should care, our $ as consumers allows this to go on. If good players that we drafted are cut due to these big signings, as a fan I care. I want to see the team builds its own talent & pay them ONCE they proven themselves here in DC. Every signing has an implication for the cap & the future. This one has HUGE implications! On your last sentence, you mean "gold" cent don't you? :) munny 02-27-2009, 01:27 PM If I'm correct our back up QB is something like 4 to 1 so what do you base that off of. I base it off of the fact that Collins played one year in his career well and in one system. He looked completely lost in Zorn's system. The 3rd stringer is a preseason fanboy star, but will not cut it. I hope Collins could step in, but I just don't see any real hope for depth there. GTripp0012 02-27-2009, 01:28 PM I voted for love the player and the money. And I voted for that knowing that I don't like the money at all. But from what I understand, the team got the contract structure they wanted, and landed their guy only 5 hours into free agency, so this is great work on all sides. Our DL is far, far better than it was at this point yesterday. And no, this doesn't make our team $41 million dollars better. But it does make the team better, and that's not usually something that happens through free agency. It takes a special player to change the prospectus of an entire organization, and we did that today. |
