Marcus Washington Expected To Be Released Today

The Redskins will be making a roster move at 4 pm today, and from everything Jason Reid and I are hearing at this point, that will result in former Pro Bowl LB Marcus Washington being let go.
Washington has been injured much of the past four years, but when healthy performed well. He was signed as a free agent in 2004, and was one of the emotional leaders of the defense. But, as I reported a month ago, several sources taking part in the Redskins' offseason personnel meetings indictated Washington would not be back with the team.
If released, Washington would save the team $4 million in cap space (a $2 million dead cap feee remains from a signing bonus proration, but his salary is off the books). Washington was very popular with fans and teammates alike, but could not get on the field with regularity and had a difficult time making plays in 2008.
Down the line the Skins could also release DE Jason Taylor and/or CB Shawn Springs for more cap relief. They are also likely to restructure several more contracts, with Dt Cornelius Griffin and T Chris Samuels among the candidates to rework deals to provide more cap sapce

Any chance we can rename this thread something along the lines of "Redskins Offseason Moves"? Because I'm sure more of these changes will come in the next couple of days.

thanks Mike. I just saw this too.

I think this is worthy of a thread. MW was a playmaker & leader in his time here. I know the blog had something about his difficulty to make plays in 08, but I think our D was notably better w/him in there. He always brought enthusiasm. I wish he could stay as a cheap (all vet min. jokes aside) backup, but I don't question the FO's decision to let him (and likely more) go.

It's a shame to see him go, I def agree with you.

Yes sir, Long time Freddy! How goes it!

Yes no doubt. Getting old is tough though.

Also no problem of course with a change of thread title as I'm sure we will have a few more changes coming in the next week or so.

Well at least Redskins games will be a little less confusing now.

its a bittersweet move. Obviously, we could not keep a player with Washingtons injury history and diminishing ability on the team at his salary. However, Marcus Washington is the only player on our defense who could really fire everybody up. He plays the game with a great passion and he made alot of memorable plays for us.

I honestly dont think anyone out there gives him a big contract. I think there is a good chance we can resign him to a vet min-ish kind of deal if he wants to come back, although comments he has made recently makes me think he may want to go play somewhere else. Unless he's playing for a division rival, i wish him the best in 09 wherever he lands.

Well there's always New England, I mean if they got Junior Seau to play.
