Paintrain 02-23-2009, 04:58 PM According to JLC, we didnt even make him an offer:
Evans Likely to Become Free Agent - Redskins Insider (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2009/02/evans_likely_to_become_free_ag.html#more)
I know we let guys like Cartwright hit free agency last year but i'm pretty sure we atleast offered them some kind of contract first. The only reason I can see not to make an offer at all is that we have no intention of retaining him. Which could mean we have faith in Rob Jackson progressing and we want to get a comp pick for Evans next year OR we have our sights on an impending free agent we beleive would be an upgrade over Evans.
I'm very disappointed we didnt atleast offer him some kind of contract. But then again, what do i know? Vinny is far more qualified than me to make these decisions and its not like he's ever steered us wrong before...
Isn't this what we always complain that we don't do? That's pretty much what most teams do, draft and develop, let players (especially just ok guys) who are getting older leave via free agency.
BigHairedAristocrat 02-23-2009, 05:03 PM Not that I am really for the Haynesworth signing (for the record, I am against it) but we can't put Haynesworth and Evans in the same sentence. The only things they have in common are they play in the NFL and they are in their late 20's but other than that we're comparing grapes and grapefruits.
If we sign Big Al and don't bring back Evans it's not that we chose one equal player over the other for a ton more money, it's that one is on a completely different plane than the other.
Yes, they are on a completely different plane - One is a cheap player who was surpassed a future first ballot hall of famer on the depth chart last year and ended the season as our best defensive lineman. He's not asking for alot of money, but he would like to start.
The other is 10X more expensive, only plays about half of his units snaps, has a history of on- and off- field character-related problems, lacks motivation, and will likely stop playing once he gets that big contract.
the two should not be in the same sentence. One fits the description of a core redskin. The other fits the description of a bad team mate and piss poor example of a human being.

Wow. Factually inaccurate but wow.

Nothing in the statement is factually inaccurate. Theres some "spin," but nothing inaccurate. Also, the last sentence is a strongly worded opinion on Haynesworth character, but that doesnt make the preceding statements about the accomplishments of Evans and Haynesworth inaccurate.

Well Evans didn't beat out Taylor, Taylor was injured in the pre-season and during the season as well. That's not spin, that's what happened. Mostly what you said was opinion so I guess accuracy can't be judged on the rest.
LandrySlice 02-23-2009, 07:20 PM Dosen't the draft have a lot to do with what we are going to do with guys like Evans??? From all I have been reading, looks like we are going after a pass rusher like Orakpo, so why would we keep Carter, Taylor, add this new rusher, and then keep an average player at best like Evans. I love Evans, but this idea of keeping him isin't that good to me?
53Fan 02-23-2009, 09:09 PM Nice sig BHA....I like it!...:laughing2

I love Evans, but this idea of keeping him isin't that good to me?Well, Taylor likely isn't back after next year no matter what, and we can get out of Carter's contract after 2010 if need be, so their presence don't actually affect the decision of who to draft.
With that said, I haven't heard that we're looking at the defensive line in the first round.
That Guy 02-23-2009, 10:49 PM well, for BHA - evans didn't play as many snaps as haynesworth as i remember, so that's not necessarily factual. evans isn't better than carter, and he wasn't better than daniels last year, so that's not true either.
evans is an okay player that shouldn't be too expensive to bring back, but he's 29 and he won't be much better than very average at best, so it's not like he'd be super hard to replace either. the skins keep 9 DL, and it's usually 4 DEs and 5 DTs, so maybe they have a FA in mind or they're comfortable they can get evans cheap after he sees there isn't much interest.
G12 - right now the skins are looking at chris canty as a FA and they've talked to orakpo (DE) for sure - and there's been plenty of talk from secondary sources (ie the guys that talk directly to danny) that they're looking OL/DL right now.
