I was pretty vocal about letting Evans handle the role last year in Daniels absence...which did ultimately happen, but not before we threw a second rounder at Jason Taylor.
After seeing a whole year of him, I think we'd be best off not extending his deal. He's really bad against the run when you consider his size. He's a good enough pass rusher to dominate the weaker offensive lineman he goes up against, but he's a total non factor against top competition. Most of his production comes from a handful of games.
His versatility is a plus, but we're not at a shortage of DL players, so I wouldn't offer him a contract right now. I'm happy we got to see enough of him to make this judgment though, otherwise, we would have just been guessing in the dark about his future right now.
We could do worse at LE than him, but I'd take one more year of Daniels over Evans. Plus, Taylor is going to line up there in specific packages anyway, so we already don't have an every down end.

Late lunch :)
Evans just isn't a difference maker in my opinion. He kind of reminds me of a backup center in basketball who comes in for maybe 10 minutes, get a couple of rebounds, commit a couple of fouls and keep the team afloat while the starter rests. I don't think his value should be underestimated, but it shouldn't be overestimated either.

Let him be a starter but at the same time don't break the bank. By the way, I hate it when players start making threats.
I say offer him a cap friendly deal if he doesn't take it show him the door. We need to mix up the line a little anyway he is certain not a high priority type guy we need to up grade away why not start with him we need someone that is going to make the quarterback a little nervous and with proper scouting we can do that with a nice draft or undafted free agents.

Let's just be sure not to pay him starter money if we're not going to make him the 16 tame starter, which I don't think we should.

evans = joe salavae; which isnt a bad thing IMO. we need spot starters like evans who have been in this organization awhile.
with evans being 30 i dont blame him for putting the "i want to start" talk out there in hopes of getting one decent pay check from the nfl. honestly, this is probaly the biggest deal he is going to get, his whole life stability and family (if he has one yet) rides on him getting the most he can in a few weeks. id rather see him get a big pay day from some other team then stay with us for less. he served us well and now its time for him to get as much as he can.
go skins!!

So many times I think we expect to have a superstar at every single position. Evans is someone who just like others have said is "solid". If anything I don't mind giving him a short term mediocre deal and have him just be "solid" for another year or two while we look at DE prospects in the draft over those years.
These days I'm just not too concerned with the short term. We have to think about drafting well for OL or DL this year and then going from there with the knowledge that we won't be Super Bowl contenders right away.

you sign him to a cheap deal, and tell him he'll be the starter but go draft a DE who will end up as a starter
