Pay him what he is worth. A solid backup DLineman who can spot start at DE and DT and play adequately to decent. He isn't a starter talent and he will get no opportunities to be an outright starter anywhere else in the league. At least I'd be shocked if he did. But as far as depth on the line he is a perfect example of someone we'd need to keep.

Daniels makes $2.2M. He's 6 years older than Evans and makes nearly 3x as much. I think Demetric deserves a pay raise, and I'm no cap expert, but I think something in 3-4 year, $6M-$7M range sounds fair. Maybe with like $4M guaranteed.
He's tough, he works his tail off, he's never been a problem in any way, he has the versatility to play end or tackle, and is a solid run stopper. All that said, he's simply not a great or even very good player. I'd say he's teetering on the line of great backup/average starter.
Excellent points IMO. See i think Evans (and his agent) think they've got a strong position here. They figure he is the best option at LDE because of Daniels age/injury and Taylor's massive expense and questionable run-stopping ability. Also besides Peppers there isn't much on the FA market for LDE. Evans is the defacto starter already and I don't think he's asking for a truckload... anyway this is just smart business on his part and I think we can sign him for a reasonable sum. This really isn't even an issue so long as the FO has decided to let Daniels walk... we save over $2 million cap hit on Daniels this year and can put a chunk toward Evans. No big deal. This only gets complicated if the FO wants to keep Daniels and/or Taylor.

"I've proven I can start in one of the toughest divisions in football," Evans said this week. "I don't want to be a backup anymore. I started in 2005 at tackle when Cornelius [Griffin] was hurt, and I started at end when Phillip [Daniels] was hurt in 2004 and again last year. I want to stay in Washington, but I want to be a starter."
Sounds like he's saying he wants to startReading between the lines, I would say that he wants to be paid like a starter. Not sure whether he's worth that kind of commitment, unless we're talking low-end starter money.
id rather get rid of daniels the him thats for sure ...
CHANCE, being the operative word, 2 be a starter, id like to keep him here. hes not bad

Thing is Evans' greatest value is probably not as a starter anyway. As BHA points out, the guy is versatile enough to play both DE and DT. He's a versatile backup who can slide into multiple positions when asked.
What makes Evans a backup rather than a starter in your opinion. Going into 09'

Is it just me or does the thread title sound like it could be the title of an R&B song.
"Start me or Lose me" by Demetric Evans... I smell a Grammy!

Apparently that's what Evans wants to know.

Yeah I should say I'm really not interested in giving him starter type money either. I like him as a backup/spot starter but nothing more. If someone out there wants to give him a big payday I think we have to let him walk.
Matty, why do you like Evens as a backup/spot starter opposed to a full time starter going into 09' ?
I asked Smoot the same question but he's pondering the answer.
