So . . . . Who starts if he doesn't?

Could be Daniels, or Taylor if he is brought back.

I know... not great options, which makes bringing back Evans pretty important if you ask me.

Thing is Evans' greatest value is probably not as a starter anyway. As BHA points out, the guy is versatile enough to play both DE and DT. He's a versatile backup who can slide into multiple positions when asked.

Exactly. Pay him what he's worth and play him. If you don't have anyone that's better than where do you go? Overpay him a little if you have to. How much production did we get out of Taylor yet we want to gripe about a few measily 500k here or there?

Well he only made 869,000 last year. 1.5 might get him to sign and he's definitely worth that. I think Daniels makes 2 mil.

We could probably gauge the "This is Vinnys ship now" by this move alone. I say if he elects to let Evens walk in favor of keeping a 36 year old Daniels, then its the same old same old. And this decision can be projected throughout the entire FA/Draft/Cut process. IMO

This is all straight from the Rosenhaus playbook. Get the media involved, throw out a veiled (or outright) threat, generate a buzz, leading to a bigger contract.

Signing Evans is a key priority. He's versatile and solid. BHA is probably right on with the $$$ about $ 1.5M or so per year, 4 yr. deal. Once Evans is signed, either Taylor or Daniels can be released. Probably Daniels due to injury issues and the fact that he can't switch to LB like JT. The FO will hold Taylor pending what happens in the draft or if a better FA LB is signed. Bottom line, unless Raji slips, any DL upgrade waits until next year.

Excellent point. The trade for Taylor last year can atleast be understood in terms of a desperation move.... and one that was praised by many prominent media outlets at the time. Drafting 3 pass catchers in the 2nd round can even be rationalized.

But letting Evans walk and retaining Taylor and/or Daniels now would be completely inexcuseable. Like you indicated, what Cerrato does here will show us whether he is really trying to build for the future or if he's stuck in the same "win now" mentality that has plagued our franchise for years.

Daniels makes $2.2M. He's 6 years older than Evans and makes nearly 3x as much. I think Demetric deserves a pay raise, and I'm no cap expert, but I think something in 3-4 year, $6M-$7M range sounds fair. Maybe with like $4M guaranteed.

He's tough, he works his tail off, he's never been a problem in any way, he has the versatility to play end or tackle, and is a solid run stopper. All that said, he's simply not a great or even very good player. I'd say he's teetering on the line of great backup/average starter.

when daniels went down i will never ever understand why evans wasn't handed the job. i like evans, he's been a solid player for us for a while now. the problem is he really isn't a difference maker. i say keep him. he deserves a chance to be the starter and he deserves a raise.
