D-Line Coach John Palermo on Redskins Nation

2/4 /09 Redskin defensive line coach John Palermo was on Redskins Nation with Larry Michael.

(I don't have a link b/c the interview hasn't been posted on Redskins.com or Comcastsports.)

Although Palermo didn't come right out and say it, it seems like there is going to be a concerted effort from a scheme standpoint to generate more pass rush and get more sacks.

He said that he has to do a better job of getting more pressure and more sacks.

He mentioned that Chris Wilson and Rob Jackson are young guys with upside.
He called Golston a 'high motor' guy and Monty as more of an 'anchor' type.

I've been critical of Palermo in other threads and discussions because of his scheme which i thought held the d-ends back.
But, i'm encouraged by what i heard from him, it could very well just be coach speak but i believe the guy.

If anyone else saw the Palermo interview, what is your opinion?

I saw it and it seemed like he was taking alot of the responsibility for the lack of a pass rush. I liked what he said about Jackson being good against the run and having a lot of upside. I thought it was interesting that he said signing JT kinda put Wilson on the back shelf. He thinks Wilson has a big upside also. I would have liked to have seen what Wilson could have done this year. Sounded like he wasn't making a lot of excuses. Even though we were #4 in defense, we have to get more sacks.

My only problem is that the people that you've mentioned in the synopsis are all drafted in the 5th round and beyond. That doesn't mean that they can't play well but I do feel that means they have less natural talent, by default, than those drafted higher then them.

You can only scheme so much and I don't know if any extra effort can make an impact at this point. This line needs a naturally talented player, or two, you can plan a scheme around.


Planning a sack-centric scheme for the personnel currently on the line is kind of like squeezing water from a rock.

I'm not sure how much of it is due to scheme or just pure lack of talent. It's probably somewhere in the middle. We really need guys like Wilson and Jackson to step up. Even if they can just provide some 3rd down pressure it would be huge.

Yes it would. And that's why I had mixed feelings about signing JT. I was looking forward to seeing what Wilson could do after his strong finish last year. Until we actually get these guys on the field during games, it's hard to tell what we have.

I think its a combination of both as well. We lack talent from a pass-rushing perspective, but most of our DL guys are extremely good at stopping the run. For that reason, I assume Blache really focused on stopping the run at all cost last year. Even though Taylors specialty was pass rushing, Blache refused to adjust his scheme to suit Taylor. Perhaps he just never really trusted that Taylor was healthy. In any case, I think Blache has to be more aggressive next year, whether we add pass-rushing talent to the line or not.

Agreed. I think we have really good depth, but the problem is asking these guys to be regular starters. We need a couple of young studs on the D-Line.

I like Wilson a lot, and wouldn't mind seeing them try him out at LB, but he barely made the team last year because he showed little to no improvement (if not regression) from the end of 2007 to the beginning of the 2008 season. He needs to step up this summer. Jackson I'm still not sure on

IMO it has alot to do with scheme.
I'm not saying that we'll suddenly get as many sacks as the Steelers, Eagles and the Cowboys.
But, we had virtually the same line we had last year + JT and we somehow managed to get fewer sacks.

There were 2 changes: 1st was going from Blache's scheme to Palermo's scheme
the 2nd was going from Phillip Daniels to JT55 which i consider to be a pass-rushing upgrade.

I agree about Wilson and Jackson, before we signed JT i thought that this year was gonna be Wilson breakout year.

Taylor wasn't 100% all year and never got in to a groove. I think a healthy JT could have got us 10 sacks or very close to that.

As far as the scheme the big difference from Grilliams to Blache is GW attacked with exotic schemes and loved to bring corners and backers. Blache plays it more straight up and doesn't get very fancy with his blitz packages. GW did a better job at disguising the shortcomings on the DL.

Im surprised that I havent heard anything about DE Alex Buzbee, before his injury there was buzz around redskin park that he was the diamond in the ruff passrusher that we had been waiting for....Did he come up at all in the interview about the D-Line???
