2009 Skins Off Season Plans Ideas, Draft and FA plus cutsgaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 03:38 PM Selecting Chad Rinehart disproves that point. With our 13th pick Trample the Elderly 01-28-2009, 03:47 PM Given JLCs blog entry yesterday, it seems the skins are planning to keep our defense in tact (for the most part) and focus on our offense. This makes a certain level of sense, since this is JCs contract year and we need to decide if he is our franchise QB or not - this year, we have to do as much as we can to help him out, so there will be no excuses for poor performance on his part in 2009. In JLCs article, it was indicated that the team needs 2 new starting guards, a new starting RT, an explosive running back to compliment Portis, and a real WR. Evidently, we will also likely be fairly inactive in free agency. I also am chosing to beleive the rumors that we are interested in acquiring more draft picks, both by trading down in the draft and in trading players for draft picks (Rogers, Moss, Betts, and Monty have all allegedly been dangled). If all that is true, here is my revised proposal/prediction for our 2009 offseason: Noteable Cuts 1. Jason Taylor 2.Shawn Springs 3. Marcus Washington 4. James Thrash Trade 1. Rogers for a 2nd round pick (I dont like it, but i think its what the skins are trying to do), 2. Moss for a 3rd and 4th (its been rumored the skins want a 2nd but i dont think theyll get it). Noteable Free Agent Signings 1. DeAngelo Hall 2. Channing Crowder - He's really an ILB, but its been reported Miami is low-balling him on an extension and he wants to test free agency. He's been playing ILB, but I think we move him outside to replace Washington. Ideally, we would sign Dansby, but he's going to be too expensive. 3. Phillip Buchannon - He's no longer an elite corner but an older guy familiar with our style of defense. We need someone to replace Rogers and he could start alongside Hall for the time being . 4.Amani Toomer- I think we actively pursue Devery Henderson but he is out of our price range. Toomer wants to stay in the division so he signs with the skins and is penciled in as a starter to replace Moss. 5. Pete Kendall Draft -Skins Trade down in the first round with somone in the 19-21 range and pick up a 2nd round pick. Remember, we have also acquired a 1 pick each in rounds 2, 3 and 4 by trading Moss and Rogers. 1 - Eben Britton, OT, AZ - (Britton becomes our starting RT. His stock has been rising and falling alot recently, but most mocks have him being available in this range. Another option is OT William Betty, UCONN. 2 - Herman Johnson, G, LSU Competes to replace either Kendall or Thomas immediately. 2 - Fili Moala, DE/DT, USC Moala can play inside and outside on the line. We pick him up for his versatility and hope he can work his way to a starting role in the future. 3 - Trevor Canfield, G, Cincy We drafted a dud with Rinehart last year. Hopefully we get it right this year. 3 - Jonathan Luigs, C, Arkansas Hopefully, Luigs can replace Rabach in 2010. 4, 5, 6 - I see us drafting atleast one LB here, and possibly a DB and/or RB. This sounds reasonable. Unlike some of the other posts, it can actually be done. All we need is a little luck and a few fish have to bite. It's still a 10-6 season at best. I think we'll need to keep drafting the lines for a couple of years, with a flash position for need here and there, before we can get up to speed. Its fairly rare for guys drafted beyond the 2nd round to ever amount to anything of significance. The important thing is to make the picks in those two rounds really count. When I look at our lines (9 starting positions) and I look at our current roster, the only guy I see starting in two years is Samuels... and he will almost certainly be gone in 5. So over the next 2-3 drafts, its imperative to accumulate as many picks in rounds 1-2 as possible and then make very smart decisions. I would also consider trading our 3rd rounder this year for a 2nd next year if someone is willing to make the trade. and if a team offers a 2nd or 3rd for a player this year (moss or rogers), ask for a 1st or 2nd next year instead. gaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 04:36 PM It makes no sense to trade rogers and make cb a position of need. He get paid 1/4 of what Shawn Springs does and about 1/2 of what Hall will. He performs statiscally at better rate then either of them just Hall gets mor ints. Moss isn't going to get traded, Zorn has made that pretty clear with his claims of how much he needed him so much last season he wouldn't even let him return punts because it would put him at risk. It also makes no sense to trade guys picked at 9 and 16 overall for 2 or third rounders especially when they are key players on our team. gaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 04:38 PM Although it wouldn't fill our line needs I would be fine with picking maualuga hes going to be a beast in the nfl for years. But the lines have to be our top priority. Trample the Elderly 01-28-2009, 04:44 PM I can see your point about Rogers. Either way, he's being dangled as trade bait. Moss on the other hand could be traded. It would burn us a little to do so with the cap. But he's on the downside not the up. Besides, what good is a #1 receiver if the Quarterback holds the ball for too long or gets sacked all the time? I would be happy with the picks we have as long as we get a OT, C, or DT with the first pick. gaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 04:50 PM Moss is getting old and I would love to see young lineman coming in here but right now we don't have anybody to take over for him at all ARE is not the answer neither is thomas. I still think he's a huge playmaker and if we can actually get him the ball without two people on him hell prove himself. gaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 04:51 PM Rogers is being dangled but well see how it plays out, I don't think they're going to be stupid about it and make a bad deal again. They got burned so hard with Taylor last year they're going to be very critical with all the decisions we make. gaudiomatt 01-28-2009, 04:53 PM I think well also see Moss getting more action in unique roles like returns and reverses which will be a good thing the guy can make plays. If I do recall he had the only punt return for a touchdown for the whole season. You can't double team a man when he's a punt returner. Might as well let him return them. It's better than him cleaning off his shoes or punching guys with helmets on. he he he |
