freddyg12 01-26-2009, 11:27 AM The comparisons to Pacman et al are interesting, but Pacman's situation is the only one really worth taking a look at as Goodell essetentially set the bar w/his treatment of Pacman. L. Little, as GMscud said, did his crimes before the conduct policy & Goodell.
Goodell will have a tough choice to make when Vick gets out, essentially a no-win choice at that. If he suspends Vick some will say that's too harsh because he's already paid his debt in jail, etc. Plus, he will set a precedent of sorts.
If he doesn't suspend him, then the nfl might take a PR beating. That in itself might be enough for Goodell to suspend him. I think he'll probably reinstate him w/some form of probation. I also think Vick deserves another chance.
Back to the original point of the thread, if SF or anyone else signs him, realistically how long will the anti-Vick stuff go on? think about it, does PETA or any other group actually have the stamina to consistently protest, picket or whatever else they do, for an entire nfl season? I don't think they would, or if they did they'd lose effectiveness.
Do Native American groups still protest outside Skins' games over the team's name? If they do, I haven't noticed it being any big deal.
In other words, I think Vick will sign somewhere, there will be a few weeks of outcry (much of it in the preseason) then it will blow over.
TheMalcolmConnection 01-26-2009, 11:57 AM Not to minimize Vick's crime, but I generally agree with the following Chris Rock quote from election season:
"The crowd went crazy with applause when they showed a big picture of Sarah Palin next to the Moose she just killed, and Mike Vick is saying to himself, 'why am I in jail?'" -Chris Rock
Just curious was the moose beaten and then asked to fight others for sport and then electrocuted or strangled to death by Palin?
Just askin'...

Dude, just drop the Chris Rock joke, the Palin-Vick comparison is not fair and not worth mentioning. Just because the same PETA people that demonized Vick would demonized Palin for her hunting, doesn't make it the same thing.
gaudiomatt 01-26-2009, 05:24 PM I definitely think Vick will be back in the league and will start as a QB. He is going to be a solid player anywhere he goes the media hype that he's a terrible teammate is overshadowing the Falcons success when he was there. They were a playoff contender and a very good team with him behind center he will find work quickly when he gets out.
gaudiomatt 01-26-2009, 05:25 PM Also people have done much worse then run dog fighting, its somethign that just hits a nerve with the american public this guy isn't as much of a gangster as some of the other trouble makers in the league.
53Fan 01-28-2009, 09:47 PM You now what's really funny is eveyones values. Some are stead fast and do not want any one with a marred past. Good for them. They have set high values. Maybe too high maybe not. Others would hire a drug lord. lol.
Vick kills an animal and goes to jail and awaits reinstatement. Pacman has people shot ...with a gun....in order to kill....and he gets reinstated and people are fine with him playing. Whether with their team or someone elses. I think I would rather take back the man who hurt the animal over trying to take another human beings life but those are my values.
In any case if we are going to say Vick is a monster and can't change then we might as well not let any of the other prisoners go either. I mean who wants a pediphile on the streets or a murderer, or a theif, or perhaps a rapist. If we are not going to give people a second chance then we better start building more prisons in everyones back yard to house everyone.
If we as a society are not willing to make sure he gets the counceling and perhaps be a spokesman or speak about what he did wrong in order to help stop this very act from accuring again and humbling him then where do you think he's going to go right back to in order to make money again?
Now I'm the last anyone would want to call a bible thumper but for those of you who hold high morals....
To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18 (http://www.allaboutgod.com/truth/acts-26.htm#18)).
and
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13 (http://www.allaboutgod.com/truth/colossians-3.htm#13)).
again I'm the last who should be called a bible thumper for I hardly go to church at all unless dragged by family but I do believe we as a society should be finding other ways to punish evil besides simply putting people in prison and not teaching them society norms, values and getting them counceling for their actions. I agree there is a % of the population that will not or can not be changed but to simply say "yea he may have learned a lesson but forget about giving him a chance" is obserd. If all busineses looked at Vick this way then how is he going to support himself or his family? I guess we should be saying thats his problem, he should have thought about it ahead of time?
I say reinstate him. Make him give a portion of his money to animal rights organizations, and force him to do commercials to humble him. Keep him on a tight leash as they did Pacman and Vicks own actions will speak louder then words. If he volunteered his services to an animal rights organization then perhaps some would change their way of thinking about him.
Vick played high school ball about 20 miles from where I live and I still don't know how I feel about him. The house he owned where he had the dogs is not far from here either and when a contractor bought the house and put it up for auction they would show the cages and houses where the dogs were kept. It was disgusting. I have never fought dogs but I have done some things that I'm not proud of and by the grace of God have changed the way I live my life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post SBXVII. Thank you.
GusFrerotte 01-29-2009, 12:41 AM I'm a die hard Hokie fan, and I've watched Michael play a lot and yes he messed up in a big way, however this man is one of the most electricfying athletes I have ever seen. He served his time, and deserves a second chance. Anyone who thinks he does not is a dumbass for thinking that. He is incredible and the Niners would definetly be upgrading with MV
You know what bud? Vick is a great athlete, but a crappy QB. Matt Ryan actually can take the Falcons places as he can pass, something Vick wasn't too good at. If you can't pass in the NFL you are useless. THe only college option QB that ever came close to winning the SB was Donovan and I think you can almost safely say he is never going back to the big dance. Also, Donovan could thread the needle when he was at Syracuse, where Vick was in a crappy conference at the time he was at Va Tech, which also had one hell of a defense!!!
44ever 01-29-2009, 09:20 AM if he is reinstated I bet he goes to the Cowboys. I just don't think JJ could resist.
VABCHSKINSFAN 02-09-2009, 12:00 PM I thought that I read somewhere that PETA actually supported Vick's return to the NFL. Has anyone else seen this?

Not necessarily, unless he passes a Psych test first.
From the Article
According to the AP (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jrN-70kJvq3hjLaX9LTuJB0SJtNwD95RS69G0), Vick's attorneys sought assurance from PETA [that] the group would support Vick's return to the NFL
