KANSAS CITY -- Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was fired Friday, a well-placed source told ESPN.
GMScud 01-23-2009, 06:18 PM I like Herm, but 15-34 in three seasons isn't exactly getting it done.
Wouldn't it be something if Shanahan ended up there?
SBXVII 01-23-2009, 06:19 PM Wow, havn't even heard it on ESPN radio yet. Suprise suprise. I think alot of people figured this would happen when they picked up their new GM.
GM, that would be a good spot for him....I'm sure he would like to stick it to the Bronco's every once and awhile just to show he should not have been fired.

Who else would be available to be the HC there? Oh and no big surprise that Herm is gone. Was Herm and offensive or defensive guy? I don't remember.

I don't know why defensive backs comes to mind. I'm probably totally wrong in saying I think he was D.
SBXVII 01-23-2009, 06:24 PM DB here ya go....
[edit] Coaching career
[edit] Early years
After his days as a player ended, Edwards became a defensive assistant at San Jose State University (1987-1989), then was an NFL scout and defensive backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs (1990-1995), for former Browns, Chiefs, Redskins, and Chargers Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996–2000), he was a defensive backs/assistant head coach under Tony Dungy. On January 28, 2001, despite never having previously held a head coaching or coordinator position, Edwards was hired as head coach of the New York Jets .
SmootSmack 01-23-2009, 06:25 PM About time.
Not about time that he should have been fired really, but about time that they did what everyone knew they were going to do and let Herm get on with his life. Last year was the first year in Edwards' brief tenure there that they started providing him with some players to build with, not guys past their prime or guys who were considerably overvalued (see Patrick Surtain, Michael Bennett, Kyle Turley, DeMorrio Williams, and others). They finally got some solid young players (Bowe, Flowers, Albert, Dorsey) now though.

Well, he played DB for the Eagles in the 70's and 80's.
Who could end up in KC... I guess Gruden, Todd Haley, Shanahan... I dunno. I think Pioli has a connection to Kirk Frerentz at Iowa, although I'm not sure why his name floats around NFL rumors every offseason. It's not like Iowa is some kind of powerhouse program. They are a mediocre team in a mediocre conference.

Well, Todd Haley is the hot rumor but I don't know how legit that is. And of course, some one (maybe PFT?) speculated Parcells uniting with his son-in-law Scott Pioli to coach there.
And there's the rumor of Kirk Ferentz as well, plus Jason Garrett
I'm going to guess Chan Gailey is really the leading candidate, because it might just explain why the Bucs were denied the opportunity to interview him for their OC spot (he's currently with the Chiefs)
Or it could be that they're going for a defensive-minded head coach and allow Gailey to run the offense. But who's a defensive-minded assistant out there? Todd Bowles, Leslie Frazier, Jerry Gray?

What about Ron Meeks? We interviewed him twice last year before going with Zorn...
