I am not sold that Brown has the size to play LDE for us nor am I sold that he has the skills to be converted into an LB.

Agree w/ analysis...any DE we draft must be able to take over the left side i.e. we're not looking for Carter's replacement here. Took a closer look at Ayers and he's said to have a ton of strength...could be the run-stopper/pass-rusher combo we want at LDE. It's tough to find the perfect guy there IMO. The system, especially under Blache, requires that player to be an excellent run-stopper first and foremost. Evans fell short of that toward the end of last year as backs we're able to break out around the end. We "need" an upgrade in that sense and I'm probably one of the few who thinks Daniels/Wynn rotating will give us the best run-stopping. But then you want the guy to be able to pass-rush too, and that's where the potential of a guy like Ayers is exciting cuz if he can do both things we've upgraded the defense significantly.

...on the other hand if we draft a DE who turns out to weak in the run game though a pass rush specialist like, umm Jason Taylor, we haven't really done ourselves a favor at LDE. I think this may be the trickiest position for us to draft this year, especially w/ a high pick, cuz we now what we want from the position and basically what we've got in the two rotating starters...

I share your concern. What really concerns me about Maybin is that he had one big year at DE as a sophmore, comes out, all of a sudden he puts on about 22 pounds and gets faster, then get's projected into the first round as a OLB prospect. What the hell has this guy been eating? Sounds like an awful lot in a short amount of time.

A college kid can do that, he's still around his peak in growth and testosterone. Someone who's already physically gifted can add these things easier than most due to more fast twitch muscles than your typical person. When I was 21 I hit the gym and in about 8 months went from 175 to 210; granted I started out pretty lean and put on some fat to go with it, I mean that's kinda inevitable at those type of gains. Strength in the big 3 lifts went from around 30-50pct up and kept going, 40 time improved. My long distance running slowed but well, that's not what I was aiming for and I'm sure neither is Maybin.

Check out what Maybin has been up to. Dude has gained 25 pounds in like 7 weeks AND suddenly runs a 40 faster than he did at the combine. This reeks of HGH if you ask me. Look at those pics. That simply doesn't happen naturally in less than two months.

Maybin significantly improves 40 time at PSU Pro Day - Bob Flounders: On Penn State football - PennLive.com (http://blog.pennlive.com/bobflounders/2009/03/maybin_significantly_lowers_40.html)

when was his pro day? article says he was 225 in january? that can definitely be done

I mean that's a bit to gain but definitely not out of the range of possibilities by any means especially by someone determined.. I think that too many people are just used to seeing people that never gain because they don't train/eat/sleep correctly

coupled with PSU's playing field for the 40 time

but GTripp brings up a good point about whether he'll continue with that type of regimen or not.. for the NFL he definitely should, there are safeties that big at his old weight

his pre-bulked up weight. I believe he was only in the 240's while playing in college. at 249 he ran a 4.78, which isn't good on weight for a DE or speed for4-3 a OLB. I don't like his short track record either, but we'll see what happens with him in the NFL eventually.

how about this guy late?
NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Lydon Murtha (http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/lydon-murtha?id=81853)
Lydon Murtha*|*Nebraska,*OT*:*2009 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile (http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=33889&draftyear=2009&genpos=OT)

hyper athletic low round OT (mainly due to a lot of injury induced missed games). he'll probably go higher than projected right now, but in the 5th or 6th, i'd take a chance there.

Overview Murtha is a prototypical smart, big and strong Nebraska lineman, but it's been tough for him to stay on the field. He missed the first two games of last season with a staph infection and the final two games with a sprained foot, the last four games of 2007 with a foot injury and his entire freshman season with various ailments (bruised calf, hamstring, shoulder).

ouch

not to mention at 6'7" he's a bit light at just 306

I might look at him as an UDFA

Best available player at a position of need. ;)

They were actually talking about this last night and most guys, including former GMs were saying you draft the best player first off, regardless of need, seemed to the the consensus, then you focus on need afterwards.

I guess you could say that's why they're not GM's anymore, but I liked their analysis.

NFL Network crawler just said that the Jets and the Jags will switch places in the 1st round if the player the Jets want is still there... no link to that yet.

I would go with Vols Robert Ayers, being a Vols fan I have watched him for several years. He has alot of upside, he did not play alot early in his career. Fulmer would play the seniority system at UT. So your just starting to see what he can do.

Plus I believe he will be there for us to take.

I would draft Defense and try to make it a dominating unit.

Go Linebacker later in draft.

If we can get one of those good OT's I'd go there. But if not, I think Ayers would be a great fit for us.

Skins will not draft a QB. I'm pretty sure they'll either take an OT or a LB. I like that LB from USC and that Bama OT.

1st- Mualuga, He's a nfl stud in the making
3rd- Sidberry(sp?), ur right, he's definitely a steal/sleeper
5,6,7- I'd go OL.. rebuild the line from the ground up
