I think what's most likely the case is that they didn't contingency plan well enough so that they didn't properly evaluate all alternatives when the board (as it would always do) didn't go exactly as planned.

I think all three 2nd round choices will be just fine in the NFL, but at what cost?

As for Peppers, message boards around the interwebs are suggesting Colt Brennan be offered up in a deal for Peppers :)

I agree. That's the key. And in an effort to sway this thread back to Peppers, we really should draft a D-lineman sometime earlier than the 5th round for once this decade. I think we'd be looking much better if those 3 2nd round picks had been (in no particular order) OL, DL, WR.

That sounds feasible but I'd rather get Haynesworth for Colt. Both teams are in need of a quarterback. Even if they decide to go with their guy for another season. How does that work out? Aren't both Peppers and Haynesworth unrestricted FAs? How could we trade if these guys can just walk anyway?

Let's get back on that Colt for Peppers deal. I think that would fly what do you guys think?

It'd be a steal for us except for a few things

1. Let's say its Colt and Rogers or even Colt and the 1st, could we afford to take a chance like that? I mean Colt isn't offering us anything right now but his upside is greater (I would think) then what Peppers can offer us. Unless we think we're going to win it all next year which I doubt.

2. Where do we turn for backup help? Not in the draft, I've heard Zorn isn't impressed with any of this year's QBs

3. I'd guess the Panthers would make a push for Cassel before Colt. But if they really want to be dicks to Peppers they'll trade him to Detroit (where he gets his 3-4 defense wish) and they get their 20th and 33rd pick and maybe take a QB there.

4. The Panthers apparently fired their defensive line coach, I wonder if that's a move to appease Peppers?

Well in Peppers case he can be franchised

How about a 3 way deal, we get Peppers and Haynesworth, the Panthers get Colt, the Titans get Delhomme. That would be money.

Can we also send Vince Young to the Chiefs who send a pick to the Cardinals who send Leinart to the Vikings and we get Steve Hutchinson?

How can we swing Peyton Manning somewhere in this deal?

I'm only on board if they throw in Bryant McKinnie as well.
