BRONCOS ANNOUNCE NOLAN HIRE
Posted by Aaron Wilson on January 26, 2009, 6:19 p.m.

The Denver Broncos officially announced the addition of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan today, hiring the former San Francisco 49ers head coach to work on new coach Josh McDaniels’ staff.

Nolan has prior stints as a defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskins, New York Jets and New York Giants.

This is Nolan’s second stint in Denver. He previously coached the Broncos’ special teams and linebackers under Dan Reeves in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Nolan was fired by the 49ers after compiling an 18-37 record and replaced by Mike Singletary as head coach.

I'm still not quite sure why Nolan got canned mid-season by the niners. They weren't a playoff team anyways and he had made major organizational changes trying to rebuild what the Yorks had run into the ground. I know he staked a lot on Smith but he had also put his ego and security aside when they figured out Smith wasn't the answer and benched him. I'd have given him another year.

I guess they saw what Linehan's firing in St. Louis did to that team and wanted to "shake things up". Singletary did an OK job at the end of the season, but we'll see how he does in an entire season.
