Drift Reality 01-10-2009, 06:48 PM I really think they ought to look into trading Portis (if that is even feasible due to his contract). He is a baller but for a team that is looking to move in a new direction it just seems as though this guy is consistently complaining and whining. If the Redskins could acquire a 1st rounder for Portis I would think they should pull the trigger.
tryfuhl 01-10-2009, 06:49 PM Sadly, this appears to be Clinton Portis' team, and the problem with that is that Portis is two outrageous comments from becoming a T.O. or a Chad Johnson. You'll see if many of the successful teams, there is an established veteran leadership among players (Brady in NE, Manning in Indy, Ray Lewis in Baltimore), I'm just not seeing that in our team. I fear that this leadership vacuum is going to cause the team to blow up if and when they have a losing season.
springs showed up in shape and played very well when he did.. the injuries were a bit much though
tryfuhl 01-10-2009, 06:51 PM Snyder has a bad habit of trying to be one of the guys by bowing down to a player and giving them whatever they want, sometimes at the expense of the rest of the organization. He did it with Darrell Green, with Bruce Smith, and now he might be doing it with Portis. He needs to put his foot down.
He needs to close his door and sign checks only.
Trample the Elderly 01-11-2009, 02:08 AM He needs to close his door and sign checks only.
Yup. And two of those checks need to go to Jordan Cross and Duke Robinson. They'll be a bit cheaper now too.
Trample the Elderly 01-11-2009, 02:13 AM JLC comes off as a moron once again. Throwing a hand-full of stats regarding Portis' inability to break long runs anymore! Question: how many times this season did we see Portis actually get out into open space w/ just one or two defenders left to beat? Maybe 2-4 times total. And yes maybe Westbrook or AP would have taken it to the house, so theoretically this team would have scored 14-28 more points on the season. Difference enough to be a playoff team? Hardly. Difference enough to even have won 2 more games? Probably not.
Point is CP gets gang-tackled 5 to 7 yards beyond the LOS almost every time he carries the ball because our line is a joke. We're old, small and slow. Oldest line in the NFC East. Smallest line in the NFC East. And absolutely the slowest because these guys almost never block downfield. You just don't see it happen. As I've said elsewhere another scat-back won't bring shit until the line is completely replaced (w/ the possible exception of Samuels, who should probably play RT). You wanna see ugly? Put Sproles in our backfield for a whole game.
While i'm just as sick and tired of CP running his mouth as the rest, he is justified in being critical, but IMHO he's too dumb to know what deserves criticism. Is it Zorn's fault we did absolutely nothing to improve the foundation of the offense from '07 to '08, that we stayed w/ the oldest, smallest, slowest line in the division? Hardly. If CP could think through his rather juvenile emotions he'd probably be throwing Danny/Vinny under the bus and asking for a trade unless the o-line is replaced ASAP. Interesting what might happen then.
Yeah I can see some of that but it's hard for me to back up CP when he can't seem to keep his mouth shut. I can't see him throwing Danny boy under the bus. He's have to pop him off his cheecks first.

Skins4L 01-11-2009, 10:51 AM the dudes just pissed hes sitting home watching other teams in the playoffs.. let it all boil over. CPs mentality will improve as the new season approaches... and BTW i doubt hed throw Snyder under the bus... he also never really threw Zorn under the bus... he just simply said he was frustrated he wasnt getting the ball in key situations... i coulda swore he was a little nicked up but... like he said... if hes dressed i guess he should be playing. He is better than Betts... NO NO.. He is (on any situation..unless its the quick screen).
horse 01-11-2009, 12:23 PM 1) Read Schneed's Post #3 before you make the statement that Zorn is an idiot. I would take Zorn's experience/opinion (over 35 years) over Portis' any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Portis isn't the most cerebral guy on the team, he responds to everything emotionally.
2) Our offensive line is the smallest in our division: Average weight of OLs in NFC East: Eagles 330, Cowboys 327, Giants 315, Skins 302. By no means is our OL a "grind it out, smashmouth" OL. The average age of the starters, (with Jansen in) is 32 years old. Over a 16 game season of pounding an older, smaller OL will break down, that's what happened. Unfortunately this isn't the Hogs of 80-92.
3) Have you ever called plays for an offense with a poor OL up front....my guess is no. It's not fun and every playcall, even what should be simple ones, is difficult.
4) My guess is Buges isn't ripping anyone, it's his unit that was the primary reason for the 2-6 drop-off at the end of the season. Not that it's his fault, but IMO it's time for Buges to retire. We need to bring in an OL coach with WCO experience. We certainly need to retool the OL. We desperately need youth/size. C, and a young stud LT would be my primary targets. Move Samuels to the right side, he's having trouble with speed off the edge. Hopefully Rinehart develops and between, Kendall, Jansen, Heyer we have serviceable back-ups at C, G, T.
Portis needs to STFU and just play football, he's getting $ 5.6M in 2009 and $ 10M in 2010. Do your job, let the coaches do theirs. Nothing helps a coaching staff more than a highly paid veteran criticizing and whining to the media about internal dirty laundry every week.....
I agree with alot of what you said, But what if the O-line and Portis did'nt get hurt we may have stayed where we were. There's alot of woulda shoulda coulda, But our season must be thought of as a success with all the things we had to overcome new coach, new system, tough division. And Samuels was hurt in the end of the season, He's a pro-bowler and one of the best LT's in the league. I would like to see Heyer start at RT he impressed down the strech.

Don't know what that's all about? I don't think CP is that juvenile, but close.
