Just did a cap sheet update. Should be available on the site in the next couple days.

With all the new signings and the Carter /Randle-El extensions I have us at $624K over the cap.

- For the new guys, all the salaries are up to date. I don't have any bonus info for them yet but any bonuses for these guys would be negligible.

- Carter's salaries were updated. They weren't high to begin with so it doesn't really affect his future cap numbers. From what I can tell he converted his $2.5M 2009 roster bonus to signing bonus (5 year proration). This saves $2M against the 2009 cap. That plus a $500K reduction in 2009 salary reduces his 2009 cap number by $2.5M similar to the article posted in the other thread.

- Randle El's salaries were updated. They were a lot higher than Carter's to begin with so he took big salary decreases in 2009 and beyond. Based on the article it seems he converted $2.5M of his 2009 salary to signing bonus, for a net 2009 cap savings of $2M. I also suspect he converted his future salaries to roster bonuses in 2010 and beyond, similar to what Carter has. I don't have the bonus info yet so Randle El's future cap hits are likely higher than currently listed on my sheets.

Thanks a million for the update... looks like smart moves on the part of the FO if we can get under the cap and thus not show our hand on cutting anyone yet.

The FO looks busy today. Great news about the restructuring. We are lucky that next year is uncapped.

Likely to be uncapped. Important qualifier.

Zorn spoke to reporters, documented in this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/19/AR2009021903025.html), and said:

- The Redskins plan to be "active" in free agency but will make efforts not to overpay.
- The Redskins plan to retain Jason Taylor.
- The Redskins intend to re-sign Pete Kendall and DeAngelo Hall, but not necessarily before they hit the open market on Feb. 27th.

From a salary cap perspective this is rather interesting. In order to create the cap room to resign Pete Kendall and DeAngelo Hall AND be active in free agency, the Redskins WILL have to shed more players. If Jason Taylor is not to be among the cuts, I think it makes Marcus Washington's departure a certainty, and increases the chances Springs will be released as well.

Then again, Zorn is not in charge of player personnel and could be speaking out of turn. Or flat out throwing up a smokescreen. It will be interesting to see what Vinny does.

I was a bit surprised at Zorn's comments about being aggressive. But does he mean they will be aggressive with going after big names? Or just aggressive in going after the guys they know will be a good fit and not necessarily a big name? I'm leaning/hoping towards the latter.

Yeah that's very possible, they could be aggressive when it comes to signing depth rather than starters.

Now, I will say this. The Redskins can probably find ways to clear more cap space than I noted was possible in the first post in this thread. They could begin giving contract extensions to lots of guys, like they did with Carter and Randle-El. That creates more cap space now. But it's a gamble because if the CBA does get extended they'll put themselves in a significant salary cap bind down the road. If the CBA doesn't get extended and the league goes uncapped, then it's not a problem.

The uncertain status of the CBA is making it tough to forecast the team's moves.

yeah, I thought so too. Maybe the word "active" is all relative here. To Zorn "active" might mean looking at all possible scenarios, making some contact w/agents, but not signing much. Around dc, "active" has come to mean signing several players to relatively big multi-year deals.

I agree w/your possible scenarios in terms of Zorn speaking out of turn. At worst, this could be one huge disconnect between he & vinny. At best, Zorn is strategically speaking to the media. He's never done that before & doesn't seem too adept at handling the pr/slant role of being a head coach, so I doubt that's what he's trying to do. Plus, it would make sense to do that if you want to drive up the price on free agents. If they really want to sign Hall, they certainly don't want to give the rest of the nfl the impression they'll set the market.

The biggest names I'd like to sign right now are Vernon Carey and Hunter Smith. I think these guys would fulfill 2 of our biggest needs.
