Betts is a fumbler, but we can't get rid of him because we would loose too much money in dead cap.

CP's injuries were nothing that would require surgery, so that's a good thing I guess. I love CP but Zorn would be wise to commit to a true two back approach next year to keep him fresh.

What are your thoughts on Laurence Maroney...just out of curiosity

This might explain some things. Like why we ran him in the ground and why we didn't see more of Betts

Well when you carry it more times than anybody in the league... hes only a year behind LT... hes getting older... Thats all.
Thats why i was thinking draft a 3rd down change of pace back or maybe Sproles... Betts style of running is a watered down version of CP. Although im not a Betts hater.

He was getting hurt every play it seemed to me too... i knew why though... all those minor injuries are tough... ive played thru some in a couple different sports in HS. They hamper... and each one was bothered situationally for CP as he tried to play with them.

We just cant run him as often as we did this year and get away with it. Hes gonna need A LITTLE HELP... Zorns just make sure we have the right guy in situationally. Because CPs too good to be on the bench during impact situations.
STILL Portis is one of the greats today...and a great Skin. Period.
Hes not a concern to me at all.

I like Maroney when he's healthy, he seems to always be nicked up.

Edge, no thanks. I know he's playing well right now but he's clearly on his last legs.

CP's injuries from this season don't seem serious at all, just needs rest to heal up. However, I think his high number of carries and the way he runs the ball just further justify the argument we need to quickly add top trench talent to the roster on the o-line. He needs better blocking up front as well as guys who will move their asses downfield so that CP isn't constantly gang-tackled by 4, 5, or 6 guys when he's gone more than 6 or 7 yards beyond the LOS. It's ridiculous how little help CP gets as compared to say LT in SD. My God, if LT had to suffer the same first i highly doubt he'd ever have broken milestones and second doubt he'd stay healthy more than a few games. Not crapping on LT here necessarily, just point out Portis' uncanny toughness and how important it is we take care of him.

Off the top of my head, he had an MCL sprain, sprained neck, bruised ribs, sprained ankle, bruised hand, a hip flexor strain... I'm sure there's more.

Good news is it's nothing some rest can't cure, and nothing requires any offseason surgery.

As far as next season, we have to find a complimentary back able to give us 10+ quality carries a game. We've got to keep Portis fresh. He played at a high level in the first half of the season, but we pounded him too hard, and as his bumbs and bruises mounted, his production went down. Of course Samuels' injury didn't help either.

Is Ladell Betts that compliment to CP? One of two things are happening with Betts - he either A) isn't good enough to get enough carries to sufficiently keep CP fresh, or B) the coaches are just dead set on feeding Portis over and over until his wheels prematurely fall off, so to speak.

I'm the captain of the Darren Sproles fan club.

Betts is legit. He only got 61 carries all year... Matt Ryan ran 55 times and Flacco 51 times.

Anyone who can go over 100 yards 5 games in a row is a quality RB. I'd use both interchangeably (like McClain and McGahee), using Portis exclusively on the goal line and I'd sprinkle in a little Rock Cartwright on 3rd downs. I'd like to see what he could do with a screen pass like the one Westbrook took for 71 yards and a TD against the Vikings. The better teams spread the ball around and get everyone involved in the offense.

Agreed and additionally we need a two headed monster back there. The best teams in the league are getting it done with a 2 back system. If Portis goes 1500 for the season he'll be useless in the playoffs.

Zorn doesn't seem to trust Betts. Id like to see Rock get a real chance. What good will a good line do with Portis on the sidelines when we need him the most.

As far as his injuries. They are not serious but are chronic. His high ankle sprains date back to his days in Denver. So Im starting to question the neglect of our backs non involvement. I think this may come back on us.

I'd hate to see us finally start to gel and be short Portis. That would be frustrating.

AND, we need to bringing up Portis replacement anyway as he won't play forever. Perhaps we could glean a diamond in the rough ala Denver, NE
