GTripp0012 01-21-2009, 03:38 PM The beauty about centers is they are usually the best value picks year in and year out. Ryan Kalil could easily have been considered one of the 10 best players in the 2007 draft and yet he fell to the second half of the second round. Centers really are one of those positions where you can find a pro bowler in the third round. So personally I would rather find a Tackle in the first and then try and get the second or third best Center with our third round pick. That might be starting to change somewhat, since two Centers entered the Sr. Bowl with first round grades.
A player like Mack is the perfect example of a guy that the scouts usually will not miss on. If three different Redskins scouts work him out, and they come to a consensus answer that he's the best college center they've ever seen, then you can bet your life he's going to be a good value pick at 13 overall.
Then again, there's always the one guy who tries to find a flaw in everyones game, as to protect himself in case he busts. If I'm running a team, I don't want those guys within breathing distance of by evaluation process. Of course, there's no telling how many of those guys the Redskins already have on staff.
KLHJ2 01-21-2009, 03:41 PM Let this marinate for a minute...
I've seen a lot of Mock Drafts having us take Everette Brown from FSU....he played DE in college but can play OLB in the pros...he's listed as 6'4" 248 lbs., had 37 tackles, 13.5 sacks, 21.5 TFL, and 3 FFs as a DE last season. This mock had the 4 big OTs (Monroe, Oher, A. Smith, J. Smith) already gone. I mean, I've been all for the OT or trading down, but for arguements sake (and since the draft ain't for another 3 months), if those 4 OTs are gone and no one wants to trade up for our pick, is Everette Brown (if he has good combine/pro days) really a bad pick?
Think about it, we need LB depth, and an OLB that can start. He's currently a big guy, we could have him lose a few pounds (5-10 lbs) so he'd gain some speed and start at LOLB, but if in a year or two we need a DE, we would have the option to tell him to take some weight gain n put him on the line opposite of Carter (he's only 29 and has a long term deal so he ain't goin' nowhere.)
I'm watching a youtube video on Everette Brown and he don't fall for the okie-doke. he doesn't bite on the play action at all...but yea he looks a lil big to be playing a OLB in a 4-3, but looks very smart
We could then Cut Washington to free up $4 million cap, then sign a OLB vet to a 2-year $4 million contract just for depth and to help out Brown...
I hear you, but let's catch the fish before we start deciding on which ones we want to toss out of the bucket.
SmootSmack 01-21-2009, 03:51 PM This is a deep draft for Cs (of course a couple of the college centers aren't expected to be Centers in the NFL-Unger is probably an OT, and he's getting killed in Mobile this week; and Luigs is looking pretty weak as well apparently)
I really like Connor Barwin as LB/DE/TE (that's right I said TE hybrid) but he's not worth the #13 overall pick
Whiteboi_J 01-21-2009, 03:57 PM I agree that this draft is deep at C/G, that's why i might be willing to accept and draft one in the 3rd round....C can transition to G pretty easily. I also heard Unger is gettin' mauled out there and Mack is holding his own....but heard BJ Rajji is having a field day in one on one drills.....That's why i'm throwing Everette Brown's name out there if the top 4 OTs are gone....
Whiteboi_J 01-21-2009, 03:58 PM lol, u said TE hybrid...u know OT Jason Smith used to be a TE....we can run a 3 TE set on the goal line with 310 lbs. Smith as an eligible receiver! lol.

I hear the defenses are killing them at the Senior Bowl? I also heard that Unger and Mack were getting burnt up? Any truth to that? Sorry for pissing on your Inaguration thread.

With first round centers the two guys that come to mind for me are Jeff Faine and Nick Mangold. Faine became productive eventually but on draft day he was considered one of the few sure things only to be replaced by LeCharles Bently. I haven't really kept track of Mangold, though on draft day I predicted that in three years the Jets would have one of the five best O-Lines in the league. Judging from their performance this year with Thomas Jones going to the pro bowl it looks like they're doing pretty good for themselves, though eventually they did have to patch things up with Faneca and Woody.
Spencer was another first round center from recent memory but from what I can recall he was drafted as a Center/Guard combo.
The funny thing is Kalil might be better then all of them, and if you don't believe just look at how DeAngelo Williams (my Facebook friend lol) broke out this past season after Carolina basically overhauled the entire line, among which Kalil was made a starter.
Anyway as a rule of thumb I feel that with pro bowlers usually the deepest you can go is the first round with tackles though you have exceptions like Jansen and McNeil. Then with Guards I think you can usually get a quality prospect in the second round. And as I said before I feel like many good centers usually fall to the third round though it seems these days that the best are being picked up in the late second (case in point Kalil and Pollack). Still a few good prospects in Wallace and Lichtensteiger lasted until the fourth round last year.

Connor Barwin is beast!

Yeah well, I should have known the inauguration thread would steer off course.
But anyway, yeah Mack is more or less holding his ground but Unger is looking awful.
Peria Jerry looking really good too (I know he's not an OL, just mentioning it)
Whiteboi_J 01-22-2009, 04:42 PM But the #13 pick depends on a few things.
1. Who do they plan on releasing before the june 1st deadline?
2. Who do they plan on resigning?
3. Anyone retiring?
4. Do we grab anyone in FA?
5. Can we trade down on draft day?
6. Who is available on the board at #13 if we stay there.
If by the end of this season not 1 of these 4 draft picks look like they are the real deal, and Kelly/Thomas/Davis are all quiet this year, I'd fire the whole scouting and player personnel staff (minus Cerrato cause he ain't goin' nowhere)
