The Goat 12-30-2008, 11:32 PM 1.) Addressing the offensive line must be the #1 priority. Actually tough to know where to begin here. Just consider for a moment the '07 unit, which endured an uncanny series of injuries, gave up 28 total sacks, while this season's relatively healthy unit gave up 38 total sacks. Certainly young talent is needed; however, am I the only fan wondering whether it's time for a new position coach? Absolutely no disrespect to Buges. Can't even imagine what he endured over the course of the season w/ his daughter passing away, but I wonder whether he is looking beyond football at this point (and rightfully so).
2) Shawn Springs will not be a Redskin in '09. Way too much time on the sideline, and his final showing was anything but impressive. Also, consider the cap hit.
3) Smoot... holy crap! I can't believe this is the same player I watched pick off passes left and right opposite Bailey. He's gone or there's some kind of conspiracy.
... implications of Springs/Smoot: Hall will be signed and Rogers retained. I think the rumors surrounding Rogers departure must be bogus. The guy's only real issue was the hoof-hands and he finally makes a pretty impressive INT to end the season. C'mon, we have to keep him. But we need a third corner, and here's where cutting Torrence was a mistake IMO.
4) Stan Hixon must go. Nuff said.
5) Campbell will be money next year (mark it, dude). He's started coming into his own. I loved the way he took off for yards when everybody was covered. But most importantly, Zorn has committed to developing JC into a great QB. JC will be much improved therefor, so long as we make some smart personnel/staff changes, our offense will be much improved.
Hail.
celts32 12-31-2008, 12:02 AM Not sure Smoot is really bad as a 3rd CB. I think a lot of the problems came when we asked more then that. He is not a terrible player.
Daseal 12-31-2008, 12:08 AM Get rid of Springs and Smoot, who do we have? Rogers. Hall. Tryon? We have good depth at CB and one of those two corners must be retained.

Am I detecting optimism here? We need to address the o-line , no doubt. I hate to say too much about Buges considering what he's had to work with the last couple of years but your point is well taken. Unless we pick up a decent corner as a FA, Smoot or Springs one would need to come back. A healthy Springs can add so much to this team but at his salary is it worth taking a chance on him being healthy next year? I just can't see us getting rid of Rogers. He should play very well next year if he's looking for a big contract. If he plays well, give it to him. If not, sign a FA and give him the money or just keep the FA until we draft his replacement. I'm definitely with you on Campbell Goat. There should be a marked improvement in Jason next year. The whole offense should be better and if it's not, I think we have answered some questions.

Just because our WRs aren't producing I don't think we can necessarily just ship someone down the river. Does Muskgrave ring a bell? It should, he was the QB coach during the Brunell years. Yeah, he's been coaching Matt Ryan all year. Sometimes it comes down to having talent to work with. The young guys are fine, they take time to develop etc. However, ARE hasn't done anything. Moss has been bad. I really think that two TD in a minute game vs Dallas still lives in Redskins fans minds. Lets face it, Moss is a #2 WR at best. In the SF game alone he dropped 3+ passes that 95% of the receivers in the NFL would catch. I believe two were on 3rd down. I guess what I'm trying to say is with the amount of information we have it's hard to throw a position coach under the bus.
The Goat 12-31-2008, 02:11 AM As a WR coach, half my group is unable to run proper routes and keep up w/ a "simplified playbook" + the other half experiences frequent and inexplicable cases of the dropsies = I'm not doing my job.
I don't buy that Hixon doesn't have the talent to work with. Certainly Moss needs to be opposite a legit target in order for him to be at his best and for the overall offense to remain balanced. Let's see, Hixon has be unable to develop Caldwell, ARL, Lloyd... let's even throw in Thrash, Mix and oh yeah two draftees that many experts had as 1st round talent. That's like 0 for 7 and I'm probably forgetting a guy or two. Hixon has had plenty of talent to work with. Just for sake of debate I'll consider he may be a better fit elsewhere... good for him. Zorn needs to find someone who coaches our talent to excellence (WCO experience should also help).
SBXVII 12-31-2008, 02:19 AM ^ Stan's gotta go. What 5 yrs no production from our WR's? No improvement? Through Gibbs first yr. Through the two yrs with Saunders(which was supposed to be a pass oriented offense) and now Zorn. Otherwise it's the WR's and all need to go! It's funny we bring in 2 new WR's from the draft and neither can produce anything? Ok, Kelly was injured but Thomas was not. Maybe we should move Hixon to special teams cause he found a way to train them for special teams.
My dream/Madden: steal the Colts OC/WR's coach Christensen....I don't care what they call him Asst. General Manager but he has produced the best QB/WR tandems for yrs. Also pick up Dennesen OC/OL from the Broncos and let Buges go.

Hail. One thing I'm sure of is Zorn breaks out the slip 'n slide as soon as the weather breaks. JC is a great scrambler but when it comes time for him to get down he acts like he doesn't know what to do.

i was at both the giants and the Dallas games. Smoot just cant cover anyone. he is terrible. i say bring back Springs, Hall, and Rogers. and fill in the blanks with youth

it seems like they target smoot a lot probably because he is the weekest corner. It also seems he gets burned by average recievers.
