SCHEFTER: COWHER WON’T COACH IN 2009 (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/30/schefter-cowher-wont-coach-in-2009/)

At a time when the New York media and Jets fans are going bonkos over the possibility of former Steelers coach Bill Cowher joining the team, Adam Schefter of NFL Network turns a fire hose on the frenzy.
“No matter what anyone says (http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/12/30/cowher-wont-be-on-a-sideline-in-09/),” Schefter writes, “Bill Cowher is not going to be the New York Jets (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/30/schefter-cowher-wont-coach-in-2009/#) next head coach. If he talks to them – which is a possibility simple for the fact that he is smart enough never to big time anybody – it is to do nothing more than to inform them that he is not interested in the New York coaching job in 2009 nor any other head coaching job at this time and he respect[s] the job the Jets do.”
We’ve got no reason to not believe Schefter, but any time we hear anyone say “no matter what anyone says,” we think of Chris Mortensen using the same or similar language in proclaiming that the Houston Texans would draft Reggie Bush (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/30/schefter-cowher-wont-coach-in-2009/#)

Why don't you think he will go to the Jets GM?

I hope the Jets hire him so we can put this guy to rest. I'm sick of all this Cowher sightings, speculations, etc. I guess Shanahan will get the batton next.

Not saying he wouldn't, just pointing out that Adam Schefter is a pretty reliable source, and he seems to think he won't be coaching anywhere in 2009.

OK. Think he is waiting to see if Zorn pans out or a sweeter deal?

Couldn't say. The Jets have no QB and the NY media is a god awful pain in the ass, Cleveland is, well, Cleveland (plus he may not want to piss off the Rooney family in Pitt with whom he is very close), and the Detroit Lions... enough said.

I'm curious to see if he has interest in Denver. They have a good young QB, he knows the AFC, they have no GM now so he could have control of personnel, plus they need defense which is his forte.

I don't think Zorn panning out has anything to do with his decision whatsoever. Maybe he just likes having some time off. Hell, he's three years younger than Zorn right now. He could chill for a few years, collect a nice paycheck as a TV analyst, and then fall into a $10M/yr coaching contract whenever he wants. I wouldn't be rushing either.

Cowher's interested in staying out of coaching until his daughter finishes high school. She's a senior right now.

Peter King has the best inside info in the business. Working for NBC alongside Jerome Bettis, while Cowher is working for CBS, it's easy to see how King would have by far the best connections. He concurs with Schefter, it ain't happening:

When Cowher left the Steelers after the 2006 season, he told his family he would stay out of football until his youngest daughter, Lindsay, finished her high-school years in Raleigh, N.C. Lindsay is a senior right now. And I'm told Cowher "absolutely'' has not changed his mind.

I'll side with Shefter/King LONG before I'll side with Mortensen as far as rumors/sources are concerned, but this is worth noting: Source: Cowher, Jets still to talk (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3799959)

Apparently Cowher has two daughters who work/live in the New York area. And if his third daughter is a senior in high school right now, she'll be finished with high school a few months before the '09 season starts.

EDIT: IGNORE THIS POST. They changed the link as I was typing this post. He's out of the running.
