Let's be honest here, we played no better than we have done for weeks.
The main reason we won was because the Eagles stunk the place up and didn't take the opportunities they had to win the game.

Agreed. That's the true reality of it.
GMScud 12-22-2008, 07:06 PM I think it was important for the team to show they haven't quit on Zorn. It wasn't pretty, but a win and a sweep of the Eagles is a small but much needed consolation for these miserable last few weeks.
Not to mention going 3-3 against the division is a lot better than 2-4.
You could tell Zorn had a big weight lifted after the win. Yes, his WCO is still a major work in progress, but Zorn was right about the players not quitting. That says a lot about them and Zorn's leadership.

We have lost similar games this year. I imagine those teams take credit for those wins. Any given day...........
The Goat 12-22-2008, 10:24 PM Jason Fabini should quit his day job... how we ended up w/ this guy as our backup AGAIN leaves me speechless. Rhinehart, oh Rhinehart, where art thou?
I spent more time watching the o-line this game than ever before, from the snap to downfield blocking, and I just can't come to the conclusion that an addition or two is going to solve our problems. I know Samuels will come back strong - we're set at LT. Pete at this point is our 2nd best lineman on the roster IMO (best active lineman currently), but do we want to count on him through another grueling season? Age, arthritis. Rabach has to go. I'm on the fence about Thomas. He struggles to block big, strong tackles (run or pass). Some think he's having a down year, like GTripp who I respect, but again do we want to count on him through another grueling season. Finally, we don't have anyone for RT. If we go into yet another season w/ Jansen-Heyer as the only options i'm gonna keep my eyes closed when we have the ball. Heyer is an effing horrible run-blocker. He goes way too high and can't turn on a merry-go-round.
So... we need to draft/recruit/develop somewhere between 2 and 4 starters on the o-line. I hope Bugel is up to the job but it may be time to get "younger" at that position too.

In 1992, the last year of Gibbs 1.0, the starting lineup for the Redskins offensive line was Jim Lachey at LT, Joe Jacoby at LG, Raleigh McKenzie at C, Mark Schlereth at RG, and Ed Simmons at RT. I use the '92 season because that was at a time right before the Redskins went into a major overhaul with a new coach, and an aging team at the dawn of the Free Agent Era. The team was old, had peaked, and was about to run out of gas. 4 and 3-win seasons followed. The Skins were officially in rebuilding mode.
The combined number of years of that offensive line in the NFL was 41 years. The number of years for this offensive line with Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, and Jansen? 49 years.

Well I can honestly say I don't think we're in rebuilding mode as a team today. We need to rebuild two-fifths to four-fifths of the o-line and add 2 or three players (max) on defense and we're a good playoff team next year. I believe it. I guess if we get crafty - Jansen has some kind of undiscovered talent at center(?) - and Rhinehart grows into himself we could get away with just two very solid additions on the line and be vastly improved. Maybe.
But yeah clearly our o-line is friggin ancient by NFL standards.
Ruhskins 12-23-2008, 01:53 AM The Offensive line is still the problem, they couldn't run block to save their lives in the 4th quarter. I don't think JC trusts the line and you see that in his play. I also think the WRs are not getting open, when JC has a ton of time to throw, no one is open except underneath. Ugh.
Kudos to the defense for winning this game. We need to improve this unit, b/c that's all we got apparently.
sportscurmudgeon 12-26-2008, 06:20 PM Goat:
You asked where Rhinehart is/was...
Now if you are willing to concede that Jim Zorn and the rest of the coaching staff did not create their starting line-up with the express purpose of getting Jason Campbell killed, you must draw this logical conclusion:
Those coaches - the ones with the football minds that guide this NFL team - really and truly believe that Rhinehart is not as good a player now as the guy they started. Yes, that guy that Smootsmack compared to a turnstile.
And when you let that sink in for a moment, you have to say quietly to yourself, "Wow!"

Exactly! Jason "truckdriver" Fabini beats out Rhinehart week after week. O-lineman drafted in the 3rd round doesn't have what it takes to step on the field - bottom line. What that means to me is this FO doesn't know how to evaluate o-line talent very well. The implication: we need to devote our highest pick to a proven o-line college stud. Basically someone you just can't screw up on. IMHO we desperately need a franchise RT anyway, might as well take the best college ball has to offer.
