Marty chimes in. Very good point on his behalf IMO.

Marty Weighs In

It's okay, you can admit it. When the Clinton Portis-Jim Zorn thing flared up, your first thought was, "Hmmmm, I wonder what Marty Schottenheimer thinks." (Well, one of you did and you know who you are.)

Today, on the "The Red Zone" on SIRIUS NFL Radio, he talked about the matter; this transcript comes courtesy of Sirius.

Host Bruce Murray: "Tell me what you think is going on in Washington, what role [owner] Dan Snyder may play in this thing and, as a head coach, how you handle it?"

Schottenheimer: "Dan may have an opinion on it but I don't think it'll go beyond that. This is clearly another example that we see in our league from time to time and 'it's all about me.' It's all about the player. You don't hear him talk about the team. You don't hear him talk about winning football games. All you hear him talk about is 'me,' him, and that is characteristic of some guys in this league. I think that has been part of the way he's been since he's been in the league. There's a reason you get upset but if you stop and think about it, the team is the only thing that's important and if you fail to recognize that then you are not part of the solution, you're part of the problem."

Murray: "How would you handle it as a head coach and is it handled differently by a head coach that has earned his stripes in this league, like yourself, who may have been around for 10 years or is it a greater challenge for Jim Zorn who is a rookie head coach and has to deal with a superstar? How does that change the dynamic?"

Schottenheimer: "Well, I think it may be a little bit different for the younger coach, the guy that has not been involved in that position, because all the players on the team are looking to see how this situation gets managed. And my feeling has always been, you have to take a strong position as the coach because ultimately, if you fail to do that, then you're giving credibility to what, first of all, the player has had to say and, more importantly, you're giving the other players a sense of, 'Well, if I get in that situation then I can go ahead and say whatever I want.' And the point I made earlier is the key in this thing. It needs to be about the team, not about 'me.'"
