PennSkinsFan 12-04-2008, 12:11 PM Redskins Youth Report (Post-NYG) | DC Pro Sports Report -- Sports news, stats and analysis from the capital of the free world (http://dcprosportsreport.com/?p=2040)
This is the new Redskins Youth Report (http://dcprosportsreport.com/?cat=241). After about 7 years of doing it the same way, times have come to change it a bit. It will now be done in a tiered ranking by different levels. Remember, our rankings are based on performance and contributions to the Redskins. The Tiers will not be separated by rookies and 2nd year players.
Top Tier Rookies:
1. S Chris Horton: Horton is the top ranked Redskins rookie. As a seventh round draft pick, this likely would not have been predictable by any Redskins fan, analysts, or writer. Horton stays on the positive because he was one of the few that put in a rather impressive performance against the Giants. Horton is aggressive and very quick. He has improved his tackling and has a strong knack for being around the football. That’;s his charm as a newly position starter on this defense. That is precisely why S Reed Doughty won’t get his job back, Horton is just to, well, impactful (new word!) Horton finished with 8 tackles and 3 assists. A good, solid performance. (1)
Spence 12-04-2008, 12:15 PM Good work. It is amazing that none of our 2nd round picks are top tier rookies or sophomores on this team. That was a nice reverse TD run by Thomas, but he's going to make it in the NFL [if he makes it] catching touchdowns, not running them. It'd be nice to see him do that.
As for Kelly and Davis, it's just brutal. Davis is allegedly too dumb to play and Kelly is always hurt and doesn't run the correct routes. I know these guys are rookies, but this level of non-production is embarrassing, even for rookies.

No kidding. I would have been so much happier had we taken either Kelly or Thomas, and used the other 2 picks on 1 DL and 1 OL.
Like the Youth Report says, Davis was one of the best TEs in the nation at USC, and they run a pro style offense. I wonder if it's simply work ethic with him?? Even if you aren't the brightest crayon in the box, if you devote enough time and effort, you can still learn your plays.
That said, rookie pass catchers are almost always non-factors in their 1st season (really only two rookie WRs in the league right now are making any kind fo impact), and the WCO is pretty complex. Plus Davis is backing up a pro-bowler and Kelly has been hurt. So we can't write them off, but it's still annoying.

I dunno. Davis is mind boggling. Of any of the three, I thought he would have been the quickest contributor, yet, he can't even get active week to week. Of the three, Kelly deserves the most leeway, because he had a knee injury and was limited for much of the beginning of the season. I would have thought they would have tired to work Devin Thomas into the passing game more than they have by now.
We really do lack a secondary receiver attack. Maybe now is the time to try and make one of these guys that second attack.

I think we're trying, and more so with Kelly right now than Thomas. In the past few weeks we've looked his way in the endzone, and he dropped a wide open long pass last week.
redsk1 12-04-2008, 02:02 PM Yeah, I just can't grasp the concept of college's best TE not being able to get into a game a couple times a week. I thought he'd play much more in some 2 TE sets, split out, etc. Unbelievable.
bedlamVR 12-05-2008, 07:29 AM Fred Davis has been inactive in the last couple of weeks because they wanted to bump Kelly up to the active list .
He has been active the rest of the season, and been on the field in some of the 2 TE sets, mostly pass blocking and run blocking so I am not sure that the problem has been he is not grasping the playbook, but more a numbers game .
The problem is and this has been exaserbated by the injury to Samuels and the DL so we have needed more DL help and carry possibly carry the extra OL, . Also the TEs are needed to stay in to block on most downs and if you need a pass blocking TE then you at this stage would be more inclined to use Yoda than Davis . Even Cooley is not going out on pass routes that often, mostly on third downs .
People are far too quick to but the boot in .
CRedskinsRule 12-05-2008, 08:13 AM Another thought on Davis:
Zorn said as much that he was new to having one Superstar TE in Cooley, it could simply be he is still learning how to utilize more than one effective TE. Just a thought, no real link or proof.
KLHJ2 12-05-2008, 08:26 AM If we lose 2 more games we should just start the rookies, Betts, and Todd Collins the rest of the year. Pass on every down including 4th, and force them to learn how to play this game and catch balls at this level. Either they succeed or they will get killed, either way they will get experience and we will have a better understanding of what we have in those 3.
Next offseason we can focus on getting better on the O and D lines and at the LB positions whether it be through FA or the Draft.
Of course I'm not serious, just frustrated.

Why Todd Collins. What's the purpose? If we are out of the playoffs, you want to dethrone Campbell's further development and confidence by putting in a 37 year old backup. Again, what is the purpose
