Giantone 10-29-2008, 04:57 AM ESPN - Rest assured, Portis has been the MVP so far - NFL (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=wickersham_seth&id=3668510&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab2pos2)
Lets hope he continues this great stretch of games, even if it is on one knee sometimes haha. Good read.
Clinton is playing great and you guys should be proud but Drew Brees ,Kerry Collins, the Kid in Atlanta also desereve a look at.
redwarrior111 10-29-2008, 05:14 AM If you look at his yards per carry he's averaging around 5 yards each time he runs the ball. That is excellent. 20 carries, 100 yards. If a back is only averaging 3.5 ypc. 20 carries, 70 yards. You see the difference? Portis is doing very well this year which is WHY we're giving him the ball so much. Is he that great a running back? Yes, but the o-line is important also.
Ahh, I see, thanks.
redwarrior111 10-29-2008, 05:26 AM No offense, but that is retarded.
It's cool. Like I said, I am completely oblivious. I chosse to jump into it, and I chose to use this board as my learning grounds. I learn anything best by just getting involved, even if I make stupid mistakes. I expect a little hazing as I go, maybe even cruel tutelage from time to time. If I couldn't take the heat I'd get out of the kitchen. I'll learn one day, even if its at the school of hard knocks, ya know? Truth is the thought just occured to me. I didn't look at the records, and as a newcomer to a culture I maybe should have watched my words more carefully. I basically just did the equivelent of going to Ireland and saying "So you guys are all useless drunks...right?'' lol. You do that, you deserve your comeupins. I really like seeing Portis play, I was just curious how the stats measure up.

Brees yes, but Collins? You are kidding. He's doing a fine job keeping the ship steady but he is very much the beneficiary of a strong D and running game. Were it not for Mannings INT's Monday night, the Titans could easily have had their first loss.
And Ryan? Again, where would he be without his running game? Maybe if he'd won last week I'd give that suggestion more credence. The kid is playing great, but MVP? Nope.
I'd rank Campbell above both of them, even with his fumbles and I don;t think he's close to MVP.
My top 5 so far:
Portis
Brees
Joey Porter
Fitzgerald
Haynesworth
Maybe Rivers if SD can start winning again - the losses aren't his fault.

Don't worry about it redwarrior. It's better to ask and learn than to stay silent and ignorant. It's even worse to be ignorant and act like you know everything. Hang in there. You'll get it. :)

No its cool man, I'm just a staunch CP supporter, and I have defended his talent for years, so it was frustrating seeing someone question it when he is leading the league. Believe it or not I meant it when I said no offense.
OK, I'm pretty sure I won't be making any friends with this one. So let me diclamier first by saying again, I'm new and a little retarded still. =)
But I just had a thought today. Is Clinton Portis really that great a running back....Or do we just use him all the time?
What I mean is, are there other running backs in the league that are as good or better, who would be just as close to the record or even further along, if they were used as frequently as we use Portis?
I think it's a legit question to ask. Yes he's had a big workload, but I think the key is he's making the most of that workload. He's averaging 5.0 yards per pop, and 5 straight games of at least 120 yards is pretty damn impressive. He's averaging 118 per game, nobody even comes close to that.
If he was only getting 3.5 - 4.0 per carry I think your argument would carry more weight.
The Skins have leaned on him hard, but he's delivering.
Should Brees not be considered because they throw all the time?
tryfuhl 10-29-2008, 01:06 PM yea its about 30 miles from it. Altavista haha hate that town.. i grew up in Roanoke
Lynchburg here via NoVA
tryfuhl 10-29-2008, 01:09 PM Probably the reason that Portis may be questioned as not as great as he is, he hasn't had a lot of the 30, 40, 50 yard scoots to the end zone as some other guys. He's not quite as "Sportscenter" here with our team.
