KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tony Gonzalez (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1231), the most productive tight end in NFL history, will be traded to a contender if the Kansas City Chiefs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=kan) get the right price.

ESPN's Michael Smith first reported the fact Gonzalez was to be shopped early Saturday morning.

A league source confirmed to ESPN that Gonzalez went to Chiefs GM Carl Peterson and inquired about a trade to a contender earlier this week.

Gonzalez, who holds the NFL tight end record for receptions, touchdown catches and yards receiving, is active in civic and charitable affairs and enjoys great popularity in Kansas City. He has always said he would like to end his career with the Chiefs, who drafted him in the first round out of California in 1997.......................

The Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=tam), Green Bay Packers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=gnb), New York Giants (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyg), Philadelphia Eagles (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=phi) have been in contact with the Chiefs regarding Gonzalez.

This would be such a great move for the Giants, and it would fill their only weakness on offense.

the first two teams I immediately thought of were Green Bay and NYG. Damn.

Scary scenario if he goes to New York. I would think that these other teams might have a greater need for tight end.

Not that I am saying the Skins should do this, but I wonder what the NFL would say in a situation where a team like the Skins contacts the Chiefs and says we will give you a 7th rounder to trade him to someone not in the NFC East.

this sounds like a move the OLD Dan Snyder would do. Gonzalez is all but finished. i hope the giants do it

dmek, gonzalez still has speed, good hands, and a hell of a vert to compliment his height well. His numbers have fallen due to not having a QB who can take advantage. I dont think he's finished until he wants to be finished. He could easily come to NY and give us serious headaches for the next 3 years or so.

a 7th rounder to trade him to someone not in the NFC East

would'nt that be considered tampering?i wonder what the chiefs are asking for him?
that tells me that next season, the chiefs are gonna go after a qb in the draft, and
a wr they can build their team around.
