Hello Everyone,
Great to be back with you this week after a great win against Philadelphia. That game was a complete team win, top to bottom…which I love. Anytime you can win a football game in all three phases, you have a good team. I think it shows a lot about the offense when Santana Moss, who has torn teams apart so far this year, can be held to zero catches, and the offense can still move the ball like they did on Sunday. I was very impressed with that.
I think Jim Zorn’s aggressiveness to win football games is a refreshing change of pace from what we saw last year with Coach Gibbs. Jim Zorn is playing to win football games, where Joe Gibbs played not to lose. Again, he has to be careful that he doesn’t roll the dice at the end of games irresponsibly, otherwise everyone would do it. However, I love the play calling at the end of the game. When you have a quarterback like Donavan McNabb, anything can happen if you give them more time on the clock.
The halftime adjustments with this team have been key, and really remind me of Joe Gibbs I. That was a huge staple of the Joe Gibbs era in Washington, they were able to get into halftime, and come out of the locker room much better prepared than the other team and we’re seeing that right now with Jim Zorn and this Redskins team. Most games, to be completely honest, are won and lost in the 3rd quarter. Its nice to get off to a fast start, or have that hot finish if you can, but if you can establish yourself in the second half right out of the locker room, it is very important both offensively and defensively.
Looking at the Stephon Heyer vs. Jon Jansen battle, I think Coach Zorn is so concerned about having someone in this offense that can pass block, that he may end up going back with Heyer. I’m someone who likes to get down to the rudiments and the fundamentals of the game, so I prefer having a solid running attack. Jon Jansen has greatly improved this Redskins running game the last few weeks, so I would stick with him. Coach Zorn, however, is very concerned about protecting the quarterback, something that Stephon Heyer just does better than Jansen, so I think that is why he is leaning towards going back with Heyer when healthy.
As far as places to improve, I think that the pass rush can still get a little bit better. I think they’re doing a good job, but there is room to improve there and right now I think it actually looks better than it really is. I like how they’ve gotten the tight ends more involved. Punting is the big key, and I still stick with the idea that they should have kept Derrick Frost. I understand why they stood by their investment, but this is something that we need to keep an eye on. Truth be told, I really like where this team is right now. They are playing the most complete football that we’ve seen out of this team in nearly a decade.
Now looking into this Sunday against St. Louis. Clearly, it’s a game the Redskins should win. However, I think St. Louis has a better chance of upsetting the Redskins than most people think. Again, will they? Probably not, but they do have some weapons offensively in Marc Bulger, Steven Jackson and Torry Holt. So if the Redskins for whatever reason take this game lightly, it will be a huge wake-up call. They do not want to undo any of the great things they’ve done these past four weeks.
Thanks Guys!
Tony
