JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, who was shot earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and has had his left leg amputated, his doctors said Monday.
They said Collier, who had 14 bullet wounds, is now in stable condition after being previously listed in critical condition.
Collier and former teammate Kenneth Pettway were waiting for two women outside an apartment complex early Sept. 2 when a gunman fired into the vehicle, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Pettway was not injured.
The motive behind the attack on Collier is unknown, but investigators said earlier he appeared to be targeted.
Collier was the third NFL player shot in the past 18 months. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was fatally shot during what police said was a botched burglary attempt at his Miami-area home in November. Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed when his rented limousine was sprayed with bullets minutes after leaving a New Year's party at a club in 2007.

man the NFL and individual teams need to step up their player personnel and mentoring for these young guys coming in, let them know this is a business and they need to be responsible about their finances and well being.

i guess the flip side is do these young guys getting big money even wanna hear what they should and shouldnt do?

i dont know, ST was just sleepin at his house, these two were just following some tail from the bar, williams was just getting alil crazy like we all do on new years . . . i dont know what the answer is. even god devouted harrison was in some way involved in a shooting . . . shits gettin a lil crazy out there so the more you put yourself out there the better the chances of something happening . . . they should let nfl players smoke weed during the offseason. honestly theyd just sit around the house, chill bbq with friends and do the occassional night out.

I wish this kind of crap would stop but sadly I do not think it ever will. People seem to have forgotten about respectand that life aint a video game, you do not get three lives.

The NFL has had a program for awhile to work with rookies about managing money and cutting ties to unsavory friends and associates. When I worked with the Panthers Donnie Shell headed their mentoring program, it was very interesting to listen to his perspectives. You can educate all you want and warn all you want but for some it is more than they can handle.

That's tragic... absolutely. I'd say he's lucky to live after fourteen bullet wounds, but it's hard to call a paralyzed amputee lucky. Very sad.

This is so sad. Poor guy. At least he still has his life, which in itself is a miracle after being shot 14 times, but he lost his career. What makes it worse is the police have made no arrests and have no suspects, so there may never be any justice for this awful situation.

but apparently, just like sean taylor's home was targeted,so was this young man. they just did'nt shoot him 1 or 2 times, they shot at and hit him 14 times. sounds like somebody may have really been pissed off at him.
