Paintrain 09-05-2008, 01:30 AM I guess I'll be the optimist (or idiot depending on perspective) to try to prop up the sky from falling, but it's one game. There is really no shame in going into the home of the defending champs on opening night and losing a hard fought game. For those of you that thought we 'got dominated' the whole game, from the mid 2nd quarter on we stood toe to toe and didn't give in. We put ourselves in a hole and didn't play well enough to get out.
The offense looked pathetic for the better part of the game and Zorn's playcalling was dubious at best. I'm glad it's September and not December. There's time to correct those errors. JC looked tentative and unsure early, but as he showed last year, the more he throws, the more comfortable and in rhythm he gets and good things happen.
On defense, we dropped 4 picks. Carlos Rogers simply has the worst hands I have ever seen on a human. I'd be terrified to let him hold a baby. Fletcher isn't going to last all season if he's gonna rack up 17 tackles a game, but that's one of the best OL we're going to see this season. The DL will improve in stopping the run which will lead to longer 3rd downs and more opportunities to get to the QB. Our field position all night (avg. start at our own 25 yd line) was crap, we need the defense to tilt the field in our favor.
I'm as pissed, disappointed and disgusted as any one of you, but I also realize we've got 15 more games and we're going to improve.

Things that will get better when we get our 3 2nd rounders in the mix, Springs and Taylor healthy, learn to give the ball to Sellers on 3rd and short, pass the ball beyond the 1st down marker not below, manage the timeouts a little better. This things will make a big difference in my opinion.
GTripp0012 09-05-2008, 01:37 AM I was pissed with the first 28 minutes of the game, but over the last 32 minutes I think we did outplay the Giants. It didn't matter because we were trailing 16-0 and have an anemic offense (for the first time since 2004), but I think it's foolish to act like we didn't do anything right. We got beaten by a team that is much better than us on offense.
Ruhskins 09-05-2008, 01:37 AM Besides, as I said before if I were a Giants fan I'd be happy for the win but concerned for the inability to put the game away. So overall it wasn't a pretty game on both sides. The Redskins do not have a potent offense, had they had one they could have easily come back in that game. And for all those yards they racked up, in the end all they had to show for was a TD (ran by the QB) and three field goals. Which by the way, if a banged up defense can hold the Giants to a TD and 3 FGs, then I have hope that a healthy defense can do great things.
Luxorreb 09-05-2008, 01:44 AM It is one game. Thankfully, I'm relaxed. I'm not sold however that the Redskins can salvage this season, even after watching only 1 week. It was a total team melt down. From Zorn to Campbell to Heyer to Rogers to Randle El to Blache. Total team loss. Disappointing and no promising. Smoot had 1 INT but between him, Rogers and Landry dropped 4-5 possible others. That's nothing new. We are short at CB. Reed Doughty is not capable of playing as a starter. He tries hard, but misses tackles and is a decent cover man if he doesn't have to contest the offense. Need another safety. We don't have a #1 WR. Got a few #2's and a lot of #3's. Worst of all our D line let the Gmen run str8 up the middle. Repeatedly. And throw the ball whenever and wherever. All other teams will follow suit, just wait. Worse than Worst of all is our OL and JC. I've never been a fair weather, but I smell the sharks and buzzards. Clean house sooner than later and bring on the OFFICIAL POST JOE GIBBS ERA! If it's over, it's over,
bigSkinsfan61 09-05-2008, 01:44 AM I wanted this game to end up with a w for the skins but it didn't. Zorn needs to get better with his play calling or else let Sherman smith call em'. j c as much as i like him needs to get rid of the ball faster. and Cooley needs to learn how to block, I saw at lest 4 plays where he got blown out ...we will get better... i did like the 2nd half a lot better than the first one defensively . first game jitters are now over

Sigh-the exact point of the original post.
IF Rogers had held onto one of those picks and returned it..
IF Rabach doesn't get blown past on the deep pass to Moss that JC had to avoid the sack and reload on..
IF the WR would have converted 2 or 3 of those first downs..
.. we wouldn't be having 90% of the panic running rampant on the board right now.. It's one game, against the defending champs, in their building, and we were 2 or 3 plays away from coming out ahead. You guys kill me.
WillH 09-05-2008, 01:50 AM You know I have to say, although he loss is frustrating, the problems we saw all game I feel are kinks that can be straightened out throughout a season.
Stuff like: Penalties, reads, route running, tackling, play calling, protection schemes, time out management, etc.
It may seem weird but after watching this game I am truly MORE optimistic. I said we'd go 7-9 this season, I am just about willing to flip that prediction, but not just yet . . .
Jamaican'Skin 09-05-2008, 01:51 AM The one "sky is not falling" thread. Thank God. I admit I may have been overly optomistic in my prediction for the game, but I was not totally disappointed. This is a new head coach with a new offensive system. In Gibbs II, yr. 1 the defense kept us in games. So far, that has been our saving grace. The D neutralized Eli, and needs to work on getting more turnovers, nothing that can't be done. JC needs to get more comfortable in the system, and that only takes time. I'm really not worried about this loss. I think it helped to put things in perspective, at leas for some of us.
Luxorreb 09-05-2008, 01:52 AM I think Sherman should probably call the plays. Zorn is not quick enough. It was embarrassing watching the team not being prepared for any kind of hurry up or late game catch up plan. Looked like preseason to me. Unfortunately the Giants were playing regular season ball during prime time week 1 and internationally broadcast!
