I wonder how many people who voted he shouldn't play would be complaining if the running game starts out slow this year. How many people might say they are not using CP right or that the coach doesn't have a feel for the player...
Let's look at the other side of the coin, what if he gets hurt, then what is everyone who said he should be in there going to say?
I don't really think there's a right or wrong answer. I'm of the opinion that he doesn't need to be out there risking injury. I would prefer he just hit season ready to go. Let him get his reps in practice.

Interesting fact: (not that this is an argument one way or the other) Football players don't get paid other than their scheduled and game checks. Game checks don't include preseason.
(I'm like 95% sure that statement is accurate and don't feel like looking it up)

Then what if all the vets said im not playing a preseason game. I see both sides. Im sure theres some pass protection packages and other things that are different the he could use a little work on.. maybe a series or so.

yeah... that type of comment had already been made and was what I was already responding to.
Yes, of course he could get hurt, just like any other player. But the coaches need to evaluate if their fundamental plays are going to work with the first string guys during the pre-season. Pre-season is a real part of getting ready for the regular season. Even Peyton Manning plays in pre-season and it is important enough that they may even play him THIS pre-season (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3500765).
Playing starters in pre-season is not a unique concept. CP needs to stop acting like he is above it. I don't mind him privately hating it. I'm sure I would too. BUT, he shouldn't act like pre-season shouldn't apply to him. I want guys who are always hungry to play football and the coach has to hold them back... Like Rock or Thrash or even Tom Brady or Brett Favre. Have an attitude and love the game!

I think Portis needs to get his head out of his ass. He as always said he hates preseason due to possible injuries. Then he goes on the radio and says it takes him atleast 2-4 games to get back into stride. Then he tells the coach's ..." Hey if you need me this weekend I'm there for you." Now he's acting like ....Why am I going in...for the media? the fans?
Portis unless you are someone with multiple personalities ....shut up. Your paid millions to play a game. If you get hurt you still get paid more then the average Joe. If your body can't take the pounding anymore then maybe it's time to hang up the cleats and allow someone else to step up.

Though I posted earlier that he should play, I'm a little surprised at how upset some people here are! I figure it's just him whining a little, but when it comes down to it, will do what he's told.
He needs to just be smart, he got hurt in 06 cause he body slammed a dude after an int. No need to do that in a reg. season game if you can tackle him square, much less in a preseason game!
I think he knows he screwed up there, but still blames it on simply playing. I ain't mad at him though, I just think he needs to get some work w/the first team so the O can get used to each other.

Lets see...Gibbs was brought in in when....2004? Potis was injured when a yr later or two. So he knew the offense and blocking schemes. He could afford to sit out perhaps. He knew his running lanes and how the blocking was supposed to take place.
Now we have a whole new offense. Yes they have said they will keep the same running game but I have wondered if they have tinkered with it and changed anything. Plus, Portis needs to know where to block when the play gets changed from a running play to a pass play or perhaps a roll out.
I have always found it funny how players will state they should not be playing in preseason. Why? So they can start the regular season not having indured any bumps or bruises. Walk out there cold and get hammered and have an injury? Whether you add 1 game or 10 games to preseason someone may get hurt. If he's playing with all the starters then these are the same players on both teams that don't want to get injured so no one will be trying to take someones head off to make the team.
Perhaps he should be more concerned about if the team has a legitimate back up so he can take breaks now and then so he won't be pounded all yr and through the play off if they make it.
