freddyg12 07-22-2008, 10:33 AM Wait wait wait wait wait.. So the Taylor trade is ass-awful because we gave up 2 draft picks (spread over 2 drafts) for a perennial pro bowler who is extremely durable and fits an immediate need BUT NO giving up a 2nd and a 5th in 2009 for an injury prone malcontent who was no better than the 3rd best TE in his division is 'very fair'?!?!? Just wow.
Ok, back in the real world.. I'd love to hear Giants fans convince me now that they are better than 3rd or 4th in the division. They lost 2 players that were top 10 at their position (Strahan & Shockey), 2 LB and a starting safety. Their star WR is upset at his contract and hardly practices anyways. Add in a Super Bowl hangover and they've got 6-10 written all over them..
Can't agree w/that more, in fact I've been waiting for someone to come out & say that the g-men are entering a world of pain. I give them mad props for maximizing every single aspect of their team in winning the super bowl, but I also think the Pats O coordinator played into their hands by calling so many deep drops for brady.
Even if they returned all their players a repeat of that performance is just highly unlikely. Maybe Shockey had to go, but he is as much a playmaker as Plax IMO. Their wr corps is ok, but the youngs guys are still unproven. Their CBs are decent but they can't expect Sam Madison to hold up & play well over 16 games. If they have a winning record this year Coughlin will deserve even more credit.
skinsfan69 07-22-2008, 12:01 PM lol nice
Sorry skinsfan69 but you're coming off like a big hypocrite here.
Shockey whined his way outta NY and was a problem child and you're fine with that.
Jason Taylor went on a TV show and that's a huge issue to you. I don't get it.
How????? I just said that the Shockey trade was good for both teams. I know Shockey is a headcase and whines like a baby. But at least I know he wants to play football and will be playing football for several more years. He's not talking about walking away. Are we sure about that with Taylor? No! There is a chance he plays one more year, otherwise he wouldn't have said it. And he can tell Vinny and Dan all he wants. We all know people change their minds. Just ask Joe Gibbs.
The Taylor trade may or may not be good for us. Sorry but when a guy says he only wants to play one more year, then goes on a dancing show and doesn't show up for workouts that would concern the hell out of me. And from the looks of it, it concerned a lot of the NFL people too. Look at all the teams that need a pass rusher? How come a deal couldn't get done until training camp starts? That's cause no one wanted to take the risk and we probably would not have done if Daniels didn't go down.

So maybe Taylor changed his mind and has now decided he wants to play more than just one year
skinsfan69 07-22-2008, 12:16 PM Yeah sure, whatever you say. You say it's fine for Shockey to miss team activities. You've even said it's even fine for Shawn Springs to skip team workouts, but for whatever reason you've decided to have a double standard for Jason Taylor. I don't know why, maybe you're upset you never made it as a Solid Gold dancer.
Sorry but I'm not giving up a high draft pick for a guy who skips workouts to go a dancing show and says he's only playing one more year. Why is that so hard for you to understand????? Cause from the looks of it a lot of the NFL GM's feel the same way I do. Otherwise someone would have already made a deal for him. Right?
Springs and Shockey are 100% commited to playing football. They haven't said they're only playing one more year. Right?? I guess that's my biggest issue. Not the dancing.

What I'm saying is the risk isn't worth it. Sorry but I just don't think we're a SB contending team. Not yet. If we were then I'd be 100% behind this move.

I certainly don't think the trade is ass-awful, but I'm not doing fist pumps either. In the short-term, the trade is going to pay huge dividends for our team. Having Carter and Taylor line up is going to make our secondary look even better. Additionally, Manning and Romo seems to struggle whenever we manage to bring a nice pass-rush. While Taylor is on the downside of his career, he's still playing at a high level and should bring us an extra win or so.
BUT, I'm not terribly enthusiastic about trading a 2nd round pick for a guy that probably will play 2 seasons in DC. I don't think we got screwed, but I'm a little nervous about giving up a high pick to add another older vet to a defense that already features Shawn Springs, London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, and Cornelius Griffin.
Taylor has said that he will play out his 2 years. So until something changes I believe him. It's a non-issue right now to me.
Back to reality now... I'm glad that the Giants got rid of Shockey. They can say all they want that they think they are a better team without him, I think that's pure BS. They just lost one of the better TE's in the game... that's a serious downgrade talent wise to their offense. Just ask any LB in the game who he would rather cover, Shockey or Boss.
The Saints on the other hand just added a serious weapon to their offense. This is going to open things up especially for Colston. I liked the Saints to win the South before this move, now I love them.

I think you should be smart enough and a fan of football long enough to know that people always say things when they want out of a bad situation (Lance Briggs-I will never play for Chicago again; Chad Johnson-ditto for Cincy). He play one more year (so might Shockey, Toomer, Springs, Portis, etc. for all we know) or he may play 5 (I'm going with 3) but I don't understand why you're so adamant about what he said several weeks back but disregard what he just said yesterday (he will play out his contract).
Parcells was asking repeatedly, particularly during the first months of free agency and around the draft, for a first-round pick (at least). That's the main reason why everyone (including the Redskins) did not budge. However, the Redskins (and I'm sure others) did the smart thing by keeping open the possibility to trade for Taylor should the opportunity and need arise. And it did.
Ideally sure something like just a 4th would have been better than a 2nd and a 6th. However, it's not a bad move for the Redskins (or the Dolphins). I just think that if you have no problem with Springs and Shockey doing their own thing in the offseason then you really shouldn't with Taylor either.
SmootSmack 07-22-2008, 12:51 PM Sorry for taking the discussion here away from the Shockey trade.

It's not my job to convince you of anything.I'm pretty sure even an honest Skins fan can admit we still have a pretty good D line without Strahan ...who did platoon last year,as for Shockey we showed what we could do once he went down and that just wasn't a one game fluke,11 straight away games.Truth be told with the lack of respect people are giving the Giants ....I can see wild card all over again. This is what I like about the Shockey deal
1) No one even knows if he'll be healthy enough to play this year
2)He hasn't finished a whole season with the Giants yet
3)He a great TE.....but.selfish and not a team player
4)He's played 7 season and health wise maybe can only play a little more.
5) penalties will go down.........
6)losing him taught the team how to be a team.
7) ...and we could get a #1....LOL
.......here........
Off chance Giants could end up with Saints' first-rounder
Back in April the Giants were holding out for a first-round pick in return for Jeremy Shockey. And though it’s a longshot, they still could get one.
That’s because the second-round pick that the Saints sent to the Giants as part of the Shockey trade could end up going to the Jets as part of the Jonathan Vilma deal. And if that happens, the Saints would have to send the Giants their first-round pick in 2010 instead.
How could that happen?
Well, back in February, the Jets shipped Vilma to the Saints for a fourth-round pick in the 2008 draft and a conditional second- or third-rounder in 2009. According to the conditions of the trade, if Vilma plays in 85 percent of the defensive plays this season and signs a contract extension with the team, the ‘09 pick would be in the second round.
Since that’s the same second-rounder the Saints included in their deal with the Giants, when they agreed to ship a second- and a fifth-rounder in 2009 for Shockey, they obviously wouldn’t be able to complete that deal as is. So instead, they’d have to ship their 2010 first-round pick to the Giants.
Of course the odds of that happening are slim since the Saints control everything in that scenario. Not only could they hold back Vilma’s playing time if he approaches 85 percent, but they also could simply wait to sign him to a contract extension.
So don’t count on getting the first-rounder. But at least it’s a possibility.
