Break it and burn it in a drunken rage!
He goes to Maryland...they play Duke in basketball at least twice. That TV won't last the year ;)

Break it and burn it in a drunken rage! That reminds me of what I like to call "The Legend of my Grandfather vs. The TV."
There is a tale that my dad and his 12 siblings like to tell regarding my late grandfather and his passion for the Redskins. One Sunday he was watching his beloved team on the huge family's only TV while eating cheese and crackers. He was sitting in his armchair cutting slices of cheddar with a steak knife when the Skin's QB, probably Billy Kilmer or Sunny, threw an interception. Apparently my grandfather was so disgusted and consumed with a cheese-fueled rage that he hurled the cutlery at the television with such force that it stuck into the top corner of the screen like a dart.
Since the family was so huge and the TV still worked (albeit it a hole in corner surrounded by spider-web like cracks) they stuck with the set for a few more years.

Now, my family is of Irish decent (hence the 13 kids) and therefore there is usually a ton of embellishment whenever any of them tells a story, but they have been remarkably faithful when telling this particular tale. I guess I hope that it's true because it makes my mid-game outbursts seem like nothing.

Anyways, BSB, you and your friends should rent a TV for the year.

So what are you going to do when you're no longer roommates? Draw straws?
Yeah we were actually planning on having one person buy it back from the other three at the end. The person wouldn't pay too much and would be the "winner".

We did think about renting it for a minute. But we are planning on living together for 2 years. I figured two years of rent would be a lot and the price of the tv would fall a lot so one of us could just win it at the end.

But you're right. Stuff might happen and we might not live together for 2 years. Also we wouldn't pay for it during the 13 week summer and maybe get a better tv in year 2. Does anyone know a general price/month it would be to rent a tv and a good place? I'm checking rent-a-center.

We ended up sticking with a decent but not great TV that one of the guys had already because while none of us could afford anything great alone at the time we did think that we wanted to split the cost.

We figured that by the time the 2 years was up none of us would want to buy the used set when the prices on brand new TVs were taking a nose dive.

Plus, we also knew that there was the risk that something would happen to it (especially since we liked to play hallway tennis and have in-home run derbies).

Maybe you could have someone suck it up and buy the thing himself, and then that guy doesn't have to chip in for cable. Just a thought.
