This is a huge shocker for me.
What the hell was the point of signing him in the first place if we weren't going to use him.
Does anyone know if this has any salary cap implictions? Penalties?
No doubt Thomas and Kelly are the main reasons Mathis got squeezed out.

Well, I am sure that was the ultimate factor...but why is Thrash still on the roster, but Mathis gone. It just doesn't make sense. Mathis wasn't here to be a WR, he was here to be a KR/PR. That was a dumb move IMO.
Redskins247 05-15-2008, 11:48 PM I think it was just some insurance in case they did not get the receivers they wanted in the draft...
That was kind of my thinking as well....just a little insurance.

I don't think it's that much of a shock. Our return game has been less than potent. Yes, Rock is great at getting it out past the 20-25 yd line on kickoffs, but we don't exactly explode in the return department. But Thomas, Tryon, Randle El, and Rock all bring enough to special teams to make Mathis, a bad apple character-wise, very expendable.
As far as $$$, probably no impact as far as salary cap is concerned. I'm sure it was a close to if not a totally non-guaranteed contract. Schneed can probably elaborate further, but my guess is he was paid for showing up for workouts/mini-camp, and that's it.

And I'm sure that Mathis was just a cheap pick-up in the event that they weren't able, for any reason, to address their WR/KR needs through free agency/trades/draft. They did so Mathis became expendable.
Plus, they've run through a minicamp with him so if they like what they saw they could always bring him back later this year
From JLC:
This just in from JLC, who is driving to Bethesda to appear on Washington Post Live:
Wide receiver/return specialist Jerome Mathis, the only outside free agent the Redskins have signed this offseason, has been released, according to the team. Mathis, who has been injury prone and has had legal issues, was a longshot to make the team in the first place. After the Redskins selected pass-catchers with their first three picks of the draft last month, Mathis became expendable.

Yeah, James Thrash sucks on special teams, can't play wide receiver to save his life, and is a total locker room cancer. Way to go FO! (insert sarcasm)

How stupid of me! He's CLEARLY an All-Pro and should be our #1 wr, so why not drop our top wr's now since the extremely young Thrash is the answer. (insert sarcasm)
