Vinny has always been in favor of using the draft more and had he had more of a say in things in recent years we probably wouldn't have made some of the moves that we did in free agency. That said, if we went after a big name WR I don't think that's an indication that this shift towards using the draft is out the window.

I think we all agree that two 1st's is WAY too much. One, maybe.

Everyone always focuses on the picks only, and not on the impact of signing a guy like CJ would have on our cap. You'd know he'd "wanna get paid" and it'll have to come at the expense of someone else not getting paid. IMO, that's what really makes this hard to do.

I'd be fine spending this years first on a proven WR or DE, especially since the bust rate of those players in the draft is typically so high. If I found out we used our first on CJ, Roy Williams, anyone else available that is a #1 or maybe a jared allen / julius peppers -- I'm more than okay with it. Especially since it seems like rookies make more than vets now days =p

Bad offer!! 2 possible first round picks for a player who's about to turn 30 and is a malcontent. No thanks!! Please Cincy, stick to your guns.

Thank God that the Bengals can save us from ourselves.

How dopey is it to come this far with all your picks just to hand them out at the last second. So much for draft disicipline.

This annoys me and doesn't bode well for who they think is going to be available with the 21st pick in the draft. One week before the draft they want to heave their draft stratedy out the window, I'm annoyed.

How is this heaving their draft strategy out the window? Trading one pick this year out of 9 for one of the best WR in the game (a position the team has explicitly said is a need), who almost definitely has several good years ahead of him.

It was supposed to be bringing in young players and teaching them the system. Not outsourcing your superficial needs at the time and jeopardizing the future of your team.

That's why Gibbs last action was to keep all the Redskins draft picks for them to use. Because even Gibbs knew the deficiency in our frachise was at its depth, and skill at depth. The only thing to remedy that is to use every pick that you are alotted on a young player in hopes of building depth.

I would love to have a playmaker of CJ ability, but honestly, 1 first rounder is too much for a receiver that is 30 years old. He is not in his "prime" anymore. he may have 1 good/great year. But, to get him if the trade went through we would have to restructure his contract, give him 15-20 million guaranteed and a 6 year deal. It honestly doesn't make a ton of sense to that. If you are going to go after someone like that, then go after a Roy Williams who is younger and may have a couple more years than Chad has. Plus, I thought we wanted a BIG receiver, chad is what 6' maybe 6'1, plus the dude is a head case. I just dont see it meshing well with our locker room. He is twice as bad and Lloyd and no body on the team could stand his stupid ass.

A) Smoot already said above that he is pretty sure the report was slightly off. Read the thread.

B) Even if the report was 100% accurate it was a 1st and a conditional 3rd in '09 that could escalate to a 1st. The escalator clauses would probably be include some or all of things like - Pro Bowl selection, All-Pro selection, 1,400-1,500 yards receiving, 10+ TDs, Conference Championship appearance, or the like. I'm sure the escalators weren't catch 25 passes for 300 yards. They were likely team/individual performance levels that, if met, would have us forgetting about giving up the picks.

The Dolphins made a trade like this several years ago for Ricky Williams. it was a conditional pick that eventually escalated to a 1st when Ricky rushed for 1,800 yards. Now over the long term Ricky didn't pan out in Miami, but that first year he was dominant. If we could get Owens/Moss like production out of Johnson (I'd assume the escalators kicked in with elite level performance) then two 1sts could be worth it. But it wasn't just two 1sts straight up. Get it straight, it was a 1st and a conditional 3rd - and that assumes the report was 100%.
