Interesting article on what MW has been up to since retiring from football

I also wish him no ill will, just sad that he never turned out to be the star we all thought he would be.... I often think of bringing his jersey out of retirment for a game here and there, but then I remember to stop dwelling on the past, and if I wanted to wear a jersey for irony, I would rock a Heath Shuler one damnit

I also forgot to mention, that after his reconstructive surgery he ran a 4.35 fourty in a workout with the bengals before signing.... pretty impressive but what was his combine speed?
Bengals grab Michael Westbrook (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2002/07/02/westbrook020702.html)

I only ask because I get tired of worrying about combine 40, press, ect.... I just pray we get a star who can make plays and free up Santana into some more single coverage and make everyone better. Is that too much to ask out of the draft? I dont care what round they come from as long as they produce and show me they are a "True player of the game and a man in life"

really good article, you can see where he's coming from. I agree w/him about feeling sorry for high draft prospects. I mean how many of these guys say "I'm the man & should be drafted high?" Sure, some of them do, but it's the scouts, coaches & fans that build the expectations, then if these guys don't come through, they're a "bust." Westbrook's career was actually not bad. If he were a 3rd round pick, we'd have said he was okay but still a bit of a head case.

The one thing I disagree w/him about is when he says he wasn't selfish enough. I wonder if his coaches & teamates agree w/that. He surely seemed pretty selfish & never seemed to play hurt (I know, the article mentions a cast on his hand).

Good piece. I gotta tell you, when I was working in DC covering the Redskins Westbrook was one of the strangest cats to deal with. I could be chatting with him and say "Hey Michael, here are the things we want to talk with you about during the interview" And we'd go over it and everything would be fine and he'd be real polite and give thorough answers. But then as soon as the camera flipped on, he was a completely changed man. I could never figure it out.

I remember reading something about him right after he was drafted that's stuck with me. Someone asked him what his favorite football team was growing up and he said he didn't have a team, and that he didn't even follow football that closely. Right then I wondered if he was in football for the right reasons. Seems like he's found his true calling now.

Too bad regarding football because the guy had a ton of talent and could have been something special. I thought he had turned the corner after the nice season he had in '99.

So, your saying he is the exact opposite of Darrell Green in front of the camera?

Hmm...well yeah I guess so. Never really thought of it that way.

I always forget if it was Casserly that wanted him or Norv. I know that one wanted Shuler and Galloway, and the other wanted Dilfer and Westbrook.
