jsarno 03-25-2008, 01:18 AM Everything CJ does from now on is going to be highly scrutinized. Everything that is worth a line will be printed.
You make it sound like we should pity him. It's not like he didn't put himself square in this situation with his overgrown mouth.
Daseal 03-25-2008, 01:35 AM I don't understand the hate from CJ. He has fun, he works hard, and he wants out of cincy. Players want out all the time. We'll see how serious he is, if he really want out he'll LaVar Arrington the Bengals and give them money back.
Bottom line, it's a voluntary workout and it's just the little bit of leverage players have. Wherever Chad Johnson goes he will light it up and be nothing but great for the team that signs him.
GMScud 03-25-2008, 01:38 AM Wasn't that a contractual issue. I don't fully recall.
I have always hated when players whine to get thier way, doesn't matter who it is. You signed a contract, and a lucrative one at that...be a man and honor it.
Yeah, he has a big mouth, but not showing up for VOLUNTARY workouts isn't a violation of his contract. I don't doubt he's sending a message (yet ANOTHER one) to the Bengals, but he's not dishonoring his contract by not being there.
Bengals players have come out and said they're not worried about Chad because they know his work ethic. Dude hasn't missed a start in 4 years and has 5 straight seasons of 87+ catches, 1200+ yards and at least 7TDs. Unreal. He's durable and explosive, and wants to win. He just has diarrhea of the mouth.

I didn't mean to imply that he wasn't honoring the contract by missing the workout. I meant to say, just shut up and play for the bengals. They already know he wants to be traded, and they came out and said no. Now he should shut up.

No one will doubt his productivity. He's a great talent. He's not worth his antics though. But that's my opinion.

Why should he 'just shut up and play'? Doesn't he have the right, regardless of his contract numbers, to state that he's unhappy with his employer? Unlike 'normal' people he doesn't have the ability to simply seek a job with one of his competitors by quitting and walking down the street to work for one of them.
I am not a blanket defender of using the media to push your agenda, for example I ripped Laverneus Coles for his constant griping about his contracts but this is a different scenario. Johnson simply wants to play for another team. He didn't ask for more money or a longer deal, he wants out.
Sorry but the whole 'just shut up and play' mentality bothers me.

i had to respond. first, he has every "right" to voice his displeasure. but as long as he is under contract, show up. they are called voluntary, be we all know the reality. secondly, no he cant just pick up, walk down the street and work for a competitor. but i also cant make the millions that he makes. he has FAR from a normal job. i guarantee everyone on his board would love to have the chance at that kind of money. not trying to argue, just disagreeing
hagams 03-25-2008, 07:38 AM I agree with the masses. This guy can make plays, and wants to get traded to a team that will provide him with a means to get a ring. It's looking like the snowball effect. It started as he just wanted out, then he demanded a trade, now he skips a work-out. This is going to get big if something doesn't happen, and I think it would benifit both parties to let Chad go.
And, what's wrong with him chasing some money? Everyone's getting paid, why not him? I think I saw a water boy clear 1.2 mil. With the way teams are throwing money away, I might try to get a spot on the team. Hell, I'll clean jock straps, and towel's everyday for 60K.

Voluntary means voluntary, regardless of contract status.
The argument of 'they make millions and I don't' doesn't hold water, it's hypocritical at best. It's a double standard and an easy cop out of a logical stance.

He is getting paid, he signed a deal in 06. Sometimes we forget that when a player signs a deal the commitment is both ways. The team has significant cap space invested in him & can't just cut or trade him w/out someone helping pick up the tab. I know teams cut players once they're not useful, but players do have the power to affect teams. Just look at what TO & Keyshawn did.
Who knows how this got so ugly, why does he feel "unappreciated?" There's always at least 2 sides to the story. Regardless, his talking to the press & trying to force the bengals hand makes me look at him like the girl who will cheat & leave her boyfriend to be w/you cause she's unhappy. So do you think that girl is going to be loyal to you?
CJ is that girl.

I agree. Until the workouts are mandatory I don't see this as significant news.
