I think I'm going to have to post this a million times before people start thinking about it but in todays NFL safetys are the new corners. Look the Broncos had Champ Bailey AND Dre Bly last year, yet their pass Defense was among the worst in the league. If any of you think we can do better then that combo, then be my guest but topping the Champ Bailey factor isn't easy.
On the other hand the Colts Defense was horrible until Bob Sanders, a FS, came back and made the Colts one of the best defensive teams in the playoffs back in 2006.
Hell our pass defense was way better then the Broncos and we had great play at Safety all through last year, and it figures to get better with Landry and Doughty no longer being rookies. Don't get me wrong we had great corner play to, but I'm willing to bet that the safetys deserve more credit for the pass defense.
You bring up some very good points. However I believe that secondary play and a strong pass rush go hand and hand. I think one of the reasons Denver had a bad pass defense was that they had no pass rush what so ever. If you put Denver's corners on the NYG you might have the best defense in the NFL.
I think it may be more of a need down the line than this year, but I think we should take advantage of a deep draft class at that positioin this year.
I definitely agree. With Rogers coming off a knee injury and Springs on his last legs we should definitely be looking to the future. CB is a pretty big need in my opinion.
I'd wouldn't give up anything for Washington. I don't think corner is a pressing need for us.
Wow, really?
Even with Rogers coming off a serious injury and an aging Springs?

Yeah. I know it's kind of contradictory with the thread I started about where can we most afford to go with the status quo this upcoming season. Because on the one hand, I think (even with Rogers' injury) we can probably get by in 2008 at the DB position, but this just seems like a very good year to draft a DB.

I think this is a great year to draft a cornerback too, I agree that we do need help at cornerback because of Roger's injury and the fact that Springs is getting older. I wouldn't mind trading for him but I'd only give up a 5th or a 6th for him, he ain't done anything in this league and we could make him into a good corner but he hasn't shown anyone that he's worth more than a 5th at best.

I agree Safeties are more important overall with so many teams running versions of the Cover 2. However, if Blache stays with the Cover-1 scheme we used towards the end of last year, as long as Landry is healthy we are fine at S. CBs who can play man are of HUGE importance for us. With Springs age/injury issues and Rogers injury we need to draft a CB no later than our 2nd pick, wherever that may be. If our CBs can't cover we will have to go to a different scheme (Cover 2 probably, and that didn't work so well last year).

Springs looks like he can play at a high level for 2-3 more years. The guy REALLY takes care of himself. People think just cause a guy is older he can't play anymore. It's like once you hit a certain age your value goes down. There are still a lot players in their 30's that are the best at their positions. Also Rogers seems to think that he's going to be ready for week one. And even if he isn't we've got Smoot and Leigh Torrnece. Torrence played in all 16 games and IMO played very well at the 3rd corner. So I think we're OK even with Springs' age and Rogers injury situation. We certainly don't need to add someone like Washington when the O-line and DE positions needs help.
I don't doubt that Springs can still play but his history of not being able to stay healthy is a bit of a concern to me. Smoot seems to always be banged up too.
