FRPLG 03-07-2008, 10:44 PM It wasnt too long ago that we were cutting our returners and signing guys for 30 million to return balls...3 million as a returner is much better. The draft is a great place to get returners, but we know what we get with rock, and hes plays with a lot of heart
I agree.
I want Rock here and happy. He does a decent job on returns and is a very strong teams player. He brigs a bit of toughness as a 3rd RB and is liked by all. He is better all day long than some fast tiny return guy who doesn't do a damn thing other than return. Other than Hester, a returner just has to be able to contribute somewhere else. And Hester only gets a pass because he so far and away better than anyone else and such a game changer.
CrazyCanuck 03-07-2008, 10:49 PM From: Redskins, Cartwright Agree To a Three-Year Contract - washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/07/AR2008030702952.html)
"Under the terms of his new deal, Cartwright, a six-year veteran, will receive a $300,000 signing bonus with a base salary of $605,000 in 2008 -- the minimum for a player with six years in the league. He will receive a $200,000 roster bonus and a $745,000 salary in 2009 and a $1.5 million salary in 2010."
I'll post a cap update in the salary cap forum.

Rock Stays
From Jason Reid: Return specialist Rock Cartwright is back. Sorry it took me so long to get this to you guys but I was on Comcast SportsNet's "Washington Post Live" and couldn't check my voicemail.
Vinny Cerrato, executive vice president of football operations, called to say that the team reached an agreement with Rock.
Terms were not released, but a team source said Rock received a three-year, $3.35-million deal that includes $500,000 in guaranteed money. Rock was believed to be seeking a guarantee of $2 million, but it appears those dollars just weren't out there for him.
"The coaches are all real happy Rock is back," Cerrato said. "You always want to keep your leaders on the team."

How ironic. I keep on hearing that Snyder and the Post have a bad relationship, but for Vinny to call JLC directly hmmmmmm? Don't worry citizens I will get to the bottom of this.
JoeRedskin 03-08-2008, 12:35 AM So it's essentially a 2 year contract w/ a (probably convertable) roster bonus.
W/out converting the roster bonus into a signing bonus: He counts 100K in 2010 if cut pre-year 3 - If on the roster he counts 1.6M. (If not converted he counts 945K in year 2)
Converting the roster bonus into a signing bonus: He counts 200K in 2010 if cut pre-year 3 - If on the roster, he counts 1.7M. (If converted he only counts 845K in year 2)
The convertible roster bonus is one of those really useful tools the Skins use in manipulating contracts to move cap hits around (e.g. if we have good cap numbers next year, then they probably won't convert Rocky's roster bonus. If a little tight, then they convert it).
DynamiteRave 03-08-2008, 12:52 AM Glad they hooked him up! can't wait to see the Rock back in action!
mooby 03-08-2008, 01:19 AM I feel kinda bad for him, he probably was expecting some interest in the open market but there weren't any teams interested in him, so he decided to just take what was out there and that was the contract with the Redskins. I'dve given him a mil signing bonus just because he's a leader on this team and he gives it his all, and he's well deserving of it. That said though, we did get a bargain from the Redskins point of view.
freddyg12 03-08-2008, 01:19 AM Good job Vinny. Now just don't go chasing selfish cancer's like D. Hall.
amen

i.e., sounds like he' unlikely to be here after 2 years, at least under this deal. Like you said, a 2 yr. deal. I can't see him making that 3rd year salary.
birdz4gibbs 03-08-2008, 10:26 AM great news and like i,ve been saying all along ..take care of your own people and this is how you do it ...
great job to the front office..
JoeRedskin 03-08-2008, 10:57 AM I just we had a damn GM - then we wouldn't have so grossly overpaid for a solid back-up and valuable team player. <sarcasm font off>
