Anthony Mix Must Be Our Man

After watching the Redskins show no interest in any free agent reciever, it dawned on me that Anthony Mix must be the guy. He is big, fast, and strong. At 6-5 tall and 235 pounds, he is a great red zone target. I know that everyone was high on him, but for some reason we have heard so much speculation that the Redskins were going after Chad Johnson, Roy Williams and Fitzgerald, we all sort of forgot about Mix. Maybe, just maybe, he is the reason they are not even interviewing, Johnson and Hackett.

Or maybe they are just waiting for the market to cool off, and/or maybe some potential trades are in the works.

I doubt that Mix is the reason they are standing pat right now.

Still to early. I don't know if this deserves its own thread, but nevertheless, we've had guys lobbying for Mix all offseason so its about time someone started an Anthony Mix thread.

With that said if he makes plays like the ones he made in Seatle last year, then I'll gladly keep him.

Strengths: Possesses great speed for size, shows good body control and flashes the ability to make the big play downfield. Has good athletic ability, flashes the ability to run crisp short-to-intermediate routes and catches the ball fairly well. Shows adequate recognition skills and generally settles into a soft spot working against zone coverage. Uses wide frame to shield defenders from the ball, he flashes the ability to make the tough catch in traffic and has the potential to develop into a productive red zone target. Gets downfield fairly quickly and has the potential to develop into a quality special teams' player. Has experience lining up at tight end, is capable of limning up at H-Back and can obviously line up at receiver so has good versatility.

Weaknesses: Does not play as fast as 40-time indicates and his speed is too straight-line. Lacks ideal burst for a receiver and will have some problems creating separation working against man coverage at the next level. Doesn't use hands well, doesn't play with a mean streak and needs to improve ability to get a clean release working against press coverage. Lacks ideal size for an in-line blocker and doesn't sustain blocks well. Has to keep weight down to stay at receiver and conditioning will always be critical to success. Work ethic has been questioned at times and character may be somewhat of a concern. Broke left wrist in 2001 and missed two games with a sprained ankle in 2003 so durability is somewhat of a concern.

Overall: Mix played in all 13 games of his true freshman season in 2002 and he lined up at tight end at that time. He moved from tight end to receiver midway through the 2003 season and he started 11 games that year. Mix started four of the 13 games he played in during the 2004 season catching 19 passes for a total of 294 yards and three touchdowns. As a senior in 2005, Mix finished with 288 yards and two touchdowns on 23 receptions. Mix is a classic 'tweener. He isn't quite big or strong enough to develop into a traditional tight end in the NFL and he lacks the initial quickness, suddenness and fluidity of a fulltime wide receiver. In our opinion, Mix's best chance to contributge in the NFL is at the H-Back position for a team that likes to get their tight ends extra involved in the passing game (see: Chiefs and Redskins). Mix's speed will cause matchup problems for linebackers and his size will cause matchup problems for defensive backs, so he is capable of becoming a quality situational receiver at the next level. Because of that upside, we think he is worth selecting late in the 2006 draft.

There's also the possibility that they intend to draft a WR. I think that assuming Mix will produce anything other than decent special teams play is a mistake for this organization.

I'm high on the guy's measureables too, but I'm not a big fan of standing pat at WR and planning on Mix being a #2 or #4.

He was cut from the Giants. If they were that high on him, they would have found a way to keep him. Simple as that.

We better not be depending on him for anything this coming season other than special teams and a prayer for a little more.

I would argue the Seattle play was more of a right place at the right time kind of deal. Beside that however, Mix has made some decent tackles on special teams all year I don't think recovering the ball in Seattle was that big of a deal.

I do however feel he does need consideration seeing that he was always is around tackles on teams. Seems like he is working his butt off to get some playing time and I hope he does get some when ARE or hackett(my hope) are tired.

Just because the Giants dumped him doesn't mean he's worthless, sometimes guys bounce around from team to team until they get a chance to start and then they prove they are worth something. Did anyone think Antonio Pierce was a Pro Bowl linebacker before '04?

If you're counting on the tiny likelihood that an Antonio Pierce situation is going to repeat itself with Anthony Mix, then you're doing a poor job of planning out your roster.

Those are rare finds. You give them a chance to earn jobs in camp, but if you're EXPECTING them to develop into a starter, as a GM you should be fired.

If you feel you have a hole at WR, you need to make a move cap-permitting. And the cap permits in this instance.

It would be nice to have a tall talented vetran but..if it can't be done due to cost then so be it. Mix was loved by the Giants. They had other needs though. Mix was going to become their next possession WR but they already had one so he sat on the practice squad. Then let go to pick up other needs. Thats when we grabbed him.

I think he will do well. He will have learning curve though. It would be nice to pick up another young Tall WR to compliment each other. Maybe take turns in and out of rotation. Maybe use both in the red zone and cause alot of problems for other teams.
