He was signed by us from the Giants practice squad so he wasn't cut as far as i can remember. If this was the case you would think they would have signed Caldwell.

If they were that high on him, they would have found a way to keep him. Simple as that. We better not be depending on him for anything this coming season other than special teams and a prayer for a little more. I am. http://www.freakingnews.com/pictures/25000/Stoned-Santa--25088.jpg freddyg12 03-07-2008, 02:26 PM He was signed by us from the Giants practice squad so he wasn't cut as far as i can remember. If this was the case you would think they would have signed Caldwell. Right, we signed him directly off their practice squad,so he wasn't "cut" he just didn't make the g-men active roster. BDBohnzie 03-07-2008, 02:29 PM Mix was a 06 Practice Squad member, who made the 53 man roster in '07. He was put on waivers so the Giants could make room Domenik Hixon. From what I heard on TV, it was pretty much between keeping Mix and Steve Smith, and they chose Smith. So I'd imagine that if Mix was a first rounder, or a return specialist, he would have been kept. He certainly did excel on Special Teams for the Skins. I'd imagine he could contribute regularly as a #4 along with his special teams work. freddyg12 03-07-2008, 02:32 PM This thread could be posed in this question: 'Does anyone foresee a situation similar to last year's draft when we opted not to draft a d-lineman, even when it was apparent to all we needed one?' Gibbs & GW said they were happy w/the progress Golston & Montgomery made, maybe that's the case w/Mix? That could be the approach here. Last year they didn't draft a d-lineman in part because they liked Landry better than anyone else. They didn't sign one in fa, cause no one was available w/in reason. That could be the case this year if Hackett can't be signed, or no trades can come to fruition. I think Vinny is thinking long-term. If the right player at right price can't be had this year, next year Roy Williams will be a free agent. Next year might be the time they look to sign a vet. I HOPE Mix has made that much of an impression, but I think it's still too early to have much indication as to what they want to do at the reciever position. The first news we might get on this is if Caldwell's agent talks to someone. skinsfan_nn 03-07-2008, 02:34 PM Well we won't know until we get a chance to see him in action IMO. JC is really high on this kid, and the best I recall he only got one or so shots at WR last year and I don't remember if the ball even went his way. So you never really know what you have until you have earned a chance to play. Could be a total dud, could be the next Randy Moss.....whos to say? However, I did like what I witnessed on special teams from Mix last season. And I would like to see him get some playing time. If he puts in the work and proves he deserves a shot to get some playing time at wide out, then I'm sure we will all find out. freddyg12 03-07-2008, 02:35 PM Mix was a 06 Practice Squad member, who made the 53 man roster in '07. They decided to keep Tyree too, another guy that plays teams & didn't get a lot of opportunities at wr. Can't argue w/that move now. jdlea 03-07-2008, 02:38 PM It would be nice to have a tall talented vetran but..if it can't be done due to cost then so be it. Mix was loved by the Giants. They had other needs though. Mix was going to become their next possession WR but they already had one so he sat on the practice squad. Then let go to pick up other needs. Thats when we grabbed him. I think he will do well. He will have learning curve though. It would be nice to pick up another young Tall WR to compliment each other. Maybe take turns in and out of rotation. Maybe use both in the red zone and cause alot of problems for other teams. The Skins have the room under the cap to make a move if they feel like it. My problem isn't that they haven't done anything, I'll have a problem if they do absolutely nothing though. They need to either add someone through the draft or via FA (I would prefer both, even if one of them is just to re-sign Caldwell). If the FO is banking on Mix becoming a legit threat, they're doing a disservice to the team. Zorn has stated that Randle El will move to the slot, so we're in need of a #2 receiver. Caldwell isn't that guy, IMO. Hell, I don't see Moss as much more than a #2 right now. I don't believe there is a true #1 receiver available right now, but Johnson and Hackett are capable of being #2 receivers. I'm not saying that I necessarily want either of them, but something needs to happen. As for the draft, I feel like this draft is full of #2 receivers from the bottom of round 1 to about the mid 3rd round. I could live with anyone from Limas Sweed to Jerome Simpson. I think if nothing is done in free agency, 2 receivers need to be selected in this draft. At this point, I think I would probably select a WR in the first and 5th rounds of the upcoming draft rather give Hackett the money he will command. The problem with that is that I don't believe that anyone (sans Sweed) is ready to come and contribute on Day 1. It's a sticky situation, but if they re-sign Caldwell and then draft a kid it might be the best route, the problem then is that they have Moss, Caldwell, Randle El (none of whom play teams), Thrash, Mix, Espy, and the Rook that's 7 receivers. I think Thrash and Espy/Mix could go and the other of Espy/Mix should end up on the practice squad. The problem with that is, you need to draft a big receiver then or you roll with a bunch of small guys should Mix not make the team. schndr_tdd 03-07-2008, 02:39 PM It seems as the front office is content with the recieving corp we have,as well as i. We need help on both sides of the line.Offense needs to get young depth, and the defense needs to get faster and stronger in the middle ,along with younger.Corner position is in desperate need right now.Remember 06' when injuries hurt our backfield, last year was pretty healthy. Slingin Sammy 33 03-07-2008, 02:41 PM Strengths: Possesses great speed for size, shows good body control and flashes the ability to make the big play downfield. Has good athletic ability, flashes the ability to run crisp short-to-intermediate routes and catches the ball fairly well. Shows adequate recognition skills and generally settles into a soft spot working against zone coverage. Uses wide frame to shield defenders from the ball, he flashes the ability to make the tough catch in traffic and has the potential to develop into a productive red zone target. Gets downfield fairly quickly and has the potential to develop into a quality special teams' player. Has experience lining up at tight end, is capable of limning up at H-Back and can obviously line up at receiver so has good versatility. Weaknesses: Does not play as fast as 40-time indicates and his speed is too straight-line. Lacks ideal burst for a receiver and will have some problems creating separation working against man coverage at the next level. Doesn't use hands well, doesn't play with a mean streak and needs to improve ability to get a clean release working against press coverage. Lacks ideal size for an in-line blocker and doesn't sustain blocks well. Has to keep weight down to stay at receiver and conditioning will always be critical to success. Work ethic has been questioned at times and character may be somewhat of a concern. Broke left wrist in 2001 and missed two games with a sprained ankle in 2003 so durability is somewhat of a concern. Overall: Mix played in all 13 games of his true freshman season in 2002 and he lined up at tight end at that time. He moved from tight end to receiver midway through the 2003 season and he started 11 games that year. Mix started four of the 13 games he played in during the 2004 season catching 19 passes for a total of 294 yards and three touchdowns. As a senior in 2005, Mix finished with 288 yards and two touchdowns on 23 receptions. Mix is a classic 'tweener. He isn't quite big or strong enough to develop into a traditional tight end in the NFL and he lacks the initial quickness, suddenness and fluidity of a fulltime wide receiver. In our opinion, Mix's best chance to contributge in the NFL is at the H-Back position for a team that likes to get their tight ends extra involved in the passing game (see: Chiefs and Redskins). Mix's speed will cause matchup problems for linebackers and his size will cause matchup problems for defensive backs, so he is capable of becoming a quality situational receiver at the next level. Because of that upside, we think he is worth selecting late in the 2006 draft. This is what I've been saying for a while now. No guarantees on Mix, but if we get Hackett we don't need any WRs in the draft. Let's give this guy a shot and if he develops and can be productive in the Red Zone great, if not look to the draft next year for WRs. If we don't get Hackett then we probably target a big, physical WR in the 2nd or 3rd round. |
