Never mind going after other free agents, there are several of our own free agents I'd like to re-sign. Actually, just Reche Caldwell. The others I don't think are a huge priority.
The Redskins' new approach to free agencySmootSmack 03-03-2008, 10:44 AM Never mind going after other free agents, there are several of our own free agents I'd like to re-sign. All I see is that the Skins are constricted by the cap and some of the big deals they made in the past are gonna start having a bigger impact on the payroll therefore the Skins are conservative because they have to be. I don't get this hype about a new "style", it seems to be the regular approach constricted. JLC's latest blog points out that Springs is the only guy to take on Danny & still be on the team. If that's true then it points to at least some sort of change. As I recall from looking at Schneed & C. Canuck's cap sheets, there are a few vet players that could be cut to free cap room. If that's true, then there is at least a change to the extent that danny & vinny are not cutting the vets we have in order to sign new ones. there are a no. of ways to free up cap room, but it looks like they're not utilizing all methods, instead opting to stay put w/the roster for the most part. It's early still. I wonder how much they'll be willing to pay for a guy like hackett or johnson. Maybe Danny has learned a thing or two over the years. They could definitely free up more space if needed, so I don't buy this talk that we're not making moves simply because we can't afford to. This is Snyder we're talking about after all. Paintrain 03-03-2008, 11:39 AM While I'm happy that we're not out spending dumb doo doo dollars on everyone out there, I still think we have some legitimate needs (CB, DL, WR) that need to be addressed and we could be missing out. I'm disappointed we weren't in the mix for the DT from Green Bay, Corey Williams or Randall Gay from NE.. I hope we don't hope that we're going to find all of the pieces we need in the draft. Bringing in Hackett or Bryant Johnson is a must IMO since we didn't pick up Ernest Wilford. This is Snyder we're talking about after all.Except if we restructured everyone in order to make signings, half the signings would be cut by next year, and the other half by 2010, just so we could erase the 30 million dollar red zone we made for ourselves. I mean, this was all planned out from the beginning back in 2006, (build the team of the future in 06/07, and let it win in 08/09) when we spent so heavily to try to build a winner, but this "patience" is just the next phase of a plan that has been mildly successful to date. prinzeofmoval 03-03-2008, 12:38 PM im against it this year..normally we go off spending too much money on OLDER over the hill players..but this year there was a fresh crop of good talent and i think we're taking a backseat so we won't be the "oh there goes the redskins spending again cliche"..bad move..sign good players and we'll be okay freddyg12 03-03-2008, 12:48 PM im against it this year..normally we go off spending too much money on OLDER over the hill players..but this year there was a fresh crop of good talent and i think we're taking a backseat so we won't be the "oh there goes the redskins spending again cliche"..bad move..sign good players and we'll be okay w/all due respect, it sounds as if your still stuck on the 2000 signings of Deion, Carrier, B. smith, etc. Since then, what "over the hill" players have the Skins signed for big $? We've brought in some old vets at low prices, e.g. Godfrey, Fabini & Wade, but look at all the others we've signed, they're all under 30 & in their prime: Coles, ARE, Loyd (no prime for this guy though, lol), Carter, Washington, Springs, Griffin, even Arch. The only over 30 players we gave considerable $ to since 01 that I can think of are Phillip Daniels & Brunell, both aren't stars but IMO have been good contributors. Of courese more recently Collins, but we know he's got value for us. prinzeofmoval 03-03-2008, 12:58 PM w/all due respect, it sounds as if your still stuck on the 2000 signings of Deion, Carrier, B. smith, etc. Since then, what "over the hill" players have the Skins signed for big $? I'm just saying if there was a time to spend its now. QBall 03-03-2008, 01:06 PM Michael Turner got: The deal is worth $34.5 million with approximately $15 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN.com's Michael Smith. He's never had more than 500 yards rushing in one season. Vinny and Co. are looking very good right now. These prices are insane! I certainly think the Redskins could be more active in free agency than they currently are. We've got enough cap room to sign quality depth players and a starter or two. But, I don't think they could afford to sign more than 1 big-name free agent unless they backloaded the contract so heavily that they might run into problems retaining that player down the road. |
