jsarno 02-21-2008, 11:23 PM I am not convinced Hackett is the answer that we need. Unless there is a growing emphatuation with Mix, or they are going to seek a big body in the later rounds (Marcus Monk in the 4th?) I would be VERY uncomfortable with this pickup. He reminds me of Brandon Lloyd for some reason.
Speaking of Lloyd, is he done and out of our plans for next year?
We don't have a 4th rounder.
Lloyd would cost us 2.9mil to cut, whether we like it or not, he may still be in a skins uni come next season.
It won't cost us a penny to cut him in 09 though.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 02-21-2008, 11:25 PM We can't afford Briggs and we don't need him. I like the possible Hackett signing. Also if Florence is signed does that mean the end for Springs?
We are supposedly retaining Springs for the 2008 campaign. It makes sense, even if we sign Florence. Springs is the #1 CB, but he's been injury prone. Smoot is a good #2 or nickel. Rogers is coming off a pretty devastating knee injury and likely will not be 100% for a year, even if he hits the field in September. We don't have any quality depth. Florence would be a good nickel while Rogers is recovering and could resume that role once Spring presumably leaves the team in 2009.
Skinny Tee 02-21-2008, 11:27 PM JLC is reporting (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/) that league insiders expect the Redskins to pursue Chargers CB Drayton Florence. My guess is that, if we go after Florence (who will likely assume nickel and dime duties), we will draft a D-lineman in the 1st round.
JLC is also reporting that the Redskins are targeting Seahawks WR D.J. Hackett. If we pursue Hackett, it's unlikely that the Redskins will use a 1st rounder on a wideout, unless they plan to demote ARE or Hackett to 4th WR spot.
JLC is also speculating that the Redskins may be unable to afford to sign Bears LB Lance Briggs, with cap-rich teams like the 49ers going after him. So, the people that hate to see the Redskins go after high-priced free agents may get their wish as we are unlikely to pursue marquee free agents like Briggs.
I like all these moves. They are very subtle and there are no huge volatile additions like there were in offseasons before. Granted we're cash strapped but maybe that bodes well for the stability for this upcoming offseason.
Hopefully we do well this season and the FO recognizes that the major additions in the offseason aren't always neccesary.

Cutting Springs would save us 2.5 mil, so it's possible we won't see him again...however, due to our thin secondary, even if we sign Florence, I think we need to keep Springs.
We can't afford / shouldn't afford Briggs, but why do you think we don't need him?
I'm OK with Hackett, but it doesn't really fix our issues of needing a big possession receiver.
mooby 02-21-2008, 11:29 PM I like the idea of signing Florence, he would be a good nickel or dime corner. And signing Hackett is another good idea imo because he's already got experience with Zorn and he probably won't be that expensive either. I'm actually glad to hear we might not have the cap space to pursue Briggs, I don't want to see him here.

I agree, plus Springs will save us 6 mil on the cap figures if he leaves after the 08 season. That seems the more likely scenario.
steveo395 02-21-2008, 11:30 PM I would definitely be happy with Hackett and Florence. We should be able to get both of them at reasonable prices and it will allow us to focus on both of the lines in the draft.
SmootSmack 02-21-2008, 11:30 PM I don't know much about Florence. But, man our luck has got to change at some point with the free agent nickelbacks we sign, doesn't it? (Harris, Wright, Macklin)

Actually we dont have OUR 4th round pick, but I think we picked one up from a trade.

Which trade?
