Funny how it's ok to overpay for certain guys.
(obviously i dont want to overpay for anybody, but with snyder and cerrato you know its going to happen so make it worth it)
yeah

Yeah, I've got mixed feeling about that. I hear what they're saying about Marcus Washington and Chris Wilson together being effective pass rushers. But why not just get one guy who can do that? And I thought they were pretty content with Montgomery and Golston's progress.

Of course, if they get a DE I don't think he should be a pass-rushing specialist like Wilson. He needs to be able to play the run effectively as well.It wouldn't be Montgomery or Golston getting replaced (at least full time). We're putting Griffin in a real tough situation by asking him to be a full time player at age 31. So far, the solution to this issue has involved NOT cutting Daniels for cap relief, and using him as a DE/DT hybrid. Short-term fix, but getting another young DT in there for the rotation, who could be expected to start by 2009 would be ideal.

It's a very odd comparison, Stubblefield to Jared Allen. I'd like to hear why you think there's any commonality there, besides the fact that they'd both be paid big money to play D Line?

I think Jared Allen is a product of his system, just like Stubblefield was. The man is talented, no doubt about it, but why do we always think success will follow players no matter what team or philosophy they go to? I use Stubblefield as the example cause he's really the last massive name we signed on the DL. Carter wasn't that big of a name at all, and he took a while to learn or system and be effective. You might be able to pull Griffin out, but he has not been anything extra special, he's just been solid overall. I'm not trying to say "Stubblefield sucked, therefore Allen will suck", all I'm saying is, big name DL players don't always translate into big time players for us.

I think they're very content with Montgomery's progress, but Golston already is all that he'll ever be in the NFL. He's a very hard worker, but in the end isn't big enough, strong enough, or quick enough to be a front-line starter in the NFL. He's a good 3rd DT, good in a rotation. But if he were a full time starter I wouldn't feel great about the interior line.

Montgomery has the size and quickness to be force. But with Griffin getting older, I can see the logic for wanting a young DT.I wouldn't say Golston is as good now as he's ever going to be...he's 25. He will likely develop into a starting caliber player...for someone else. There's not going to be enough cash on hand after the 2009 campaign to give to Golston an extention, and he will probably go and sign for a team who has a need at the position.

we need shaun rogers. clog up the middle and let our athletes on the outside take care of business. he was the biggest man ive ever seen in person at the lions/skins which in fact we whipped their ass.

rogers or allen would be great

Vinny did mention the need for an interior lineman with some rush ability, the type that's very difficult to find. It does apear to be more of a priority than DE. He eluded to the 20.5 sacks from the DE position last year, maybe he feels that is sufficient production from the DE position.

Hey i did not say its ok to overpay for anyone. but assuming that we will with cerrato running things all i am saying is that allen would have the biggest impact. believe i rather draft a person at any position. we have plenty of talent and if it was up to me i wouldnt sign any big name guys and just have a good draft. building through the draft is key.

If Calais Campbell or Phillip Merling fall to us IMO we need to take one of them. I think the production of Washington and Wilson had a lot to do with scheme rather than straight up physically beating the OL. I'm with you, there is no substitute for a DE that can physically dominate his man in both the pass & run game. (The Giants looked pretty good doing it, and Mario Williams is making Casserly look like a genius for passing on Bush). I think Cerrato may also be throwing out a little smoke-screen prior to the combine and draft.

I don't think we should overpay for any free agents this year, i'm too wary of the "it could just be the system they were in" bug to really want to go after anyone. I do think we should draft a defensive end that can be a full time starter like Carter, but Vinny does have a point when he said that we need someone at DT that can rush the passer as well.
